NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 9 – The Director of Immigration Jane Waikenda was on Thursday night discharged from hospital after suffering an asthma attack while being taken to the Ethics and Anti Corruption Commission (EACC) offices for questioning.
The EACC detectives had picked her up from Nyayo House for questioning over the issuance of work permits to foreigners.
Addressing journalists at the Nairobi Hospital, Waikenda said she was going to cooperate with the commission as it continues with investigations.
“What I would wish for is that we continue partnering with the Anti-Corruption Commission and I am very happy to continue with the meeting tomorrow morning (Friday) so that we can clear issues that will help this country,” she affirmed.
“But I’m hoping also, that the Anti-Corruption Commission will not be misused because the battles that are there (Nyayo House) are vicious.”
She defended herself, saying she has always dedicated herself to dismantle cartels at the Immigration Department.
“Since I joined immigration six months ago I have been doing a lot of clean up… I have tried so much to dismantle cartels and brokers that have been working in the Department of Immigration. I’m sure you all know that those cartels are vicious and corruption fights back fiercely,” she pointed out.
Waikenda is expected back at Integrity Centre on Friday morning.
The EACC has been investigating various officials at Nyayo House over the irregular issuance of permits to foreigners.
Several officers have been questioned over the matter, with the commission indicating it will prosecute anyone found culpable.
