ICPC Officials Trained On Weapons Handling

ICPC CHAIRMAN, EKPO NTA

About 335 officials of ‎the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), were, yesterday, presented with certificates for weapon handling and intelligence gathering.

Chairman of the commission, Mr. Ekpo Nta, who spoke during the presentation ceremony at the ICPC headquarters, said with the training, the officers and men of the commission were better in a better stead to tackle crimes as law enforcement agents.

Mr. Nta recalled that when he first assumed office as the chairman of the commission, members of staff were operating without proper field expertise and always required the services of other security agencies to handle cases.

He, however, pledged ‎that further training would be intense as the commission had concluded plans to take delivery of 250 computers for its e-learning centre just as plans have also been put in place for the implementation of physical exercise as compulsory for staff of the commission.

While commenting on the importance of the training, the secretary of ICPC, Elvis Oglafa, noted as an agency that required intelligence gathering, the training would assist the commission in handling some of its own cases where its staff were sometimes faced with attacks and hostility associated with the nature of the job.

The ICPC scribe further noted that the training would improve the aspect of discipline in the commission as the staff had now been trained to behave and respect seniority as it is the practice in security agencies.

It was gathered that the presentation of certificates for weapon handling was performed by the commandant of the 177 Guard Battalion, who was represented by Ben Ikpolo.

In his remarks, Mr. Ikpolo congratulated the officials on the successful completion of the three months training that held from November 2013 to February 2014, adding that the training reinforced the need for improved security in the face of the current security challenges.

I Am Still Suffering For Not Having A Yoruba Speaker- Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan on Friday said he regrets the failure of the South-west to get the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives in accordance with the zoning arrangement of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

“I always say it; one of the problems I faced in the National Assembly was that I felt the right thing should be done because our party has a formula. We have six geo-political zones in the country and when the president emerges from one of the geo-political zones, the vice president emerges from another geo-political zone, the rest core offices – the senate president, the speaker, Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the chairman of the party – must come from different geo-political zones,” Jonathan said at the Yoruba Unity Summit, organised by the Yoruba Unity Forum and held at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State.

“The idea is that, whenever we are distributing board positions and some of these appointments, these people sit to take decisions. Whenever we are appointing ministers, all these people sit to take decisions. In that case, we want all the geo-political zones to be in the inner caucus that take critical decisions,” the president explained.

“The last time, it was difficult for me because I insisted that the South-west must get the office of speaker. Of course, I couldn’t go through with it because some of us within the South-west didn’t want it based on some personal reasons. I am still suffering from that till today. That is one of the reasons that the leaders said, this time around, we must work collectively so that whatever position is zoned to the South-west, we should get that position.”

Dimeji Bankole, Speaker Honourable Representative, April 2003 – 29 May 2011

The last time a lawmaker from the South-West held the position of the speaker was in 2011 when Dimeji Bankole, representing Abeokuta South Federal Constituency finished his tenure. Although, the zone of the President, his vice and the Senate president has remained the same, a northerner Aminu Tambuwal has held the position since 2011. If the PDP zoning was to be considered, someone from the southwest should be speaker of the House of Representatives.

Jonathan restated his commitment to keeping Nigeria as one and he said he remained true to his conviction of a united Nigeria. He praised the efforts of the Yoruba people and their cooperation with other sections of the country to ensure Nigeria remains united. He therefore pledged to do more for the region, as over 50 percent of the nation’s wealth comes from it.

He observed that the gathering was “not just about the unity of the descendants of Oduduwa but a clarion call on Nigerians to embark on a path to seek accommodation and build consensus.”

He therefore charged people of the country to live in harmony, noting that with love, understanding and respect for one another, there is no obstacle Nigeria would not surmount.

5 Body Language Secrets To Attract Women

It is said that cupid favours the brave! So, one needs to be ready when the right one comes along. The first step of attraction may be physical (looks or voice), but the key factor is surely communication. And only 10% of what we communicate happens through words; the rest is all body language. Getting the body language right goes a long way in making people like you. Here we reveal a few secrets on how to master this language and attract women.

1. Smile please
A smile can be very powerful when used effectively. It is one of the first things people notice about you when they see you. A good smile shows your confidence and enthusiasm.

2. Let your eyes speak!
Make and maintain eye contact. Women look for confidence and sincerity in a man and there is no one better to tell them about it than your eyes. Also keep your eyes from wandering off to ‘you-know-where’ when you are talking to her. Eye contact and glances can also be used to invite or express interest.

3. Move your body
Movements are important. Hurried, fidgety gestures and movements spell low self-confidence. Moving too fast may make her feel intimidated. Controlled movements are signs of a confident man. They also give the other person a sense of comfort.

4. Walk like a man
It is ‘key’ to have a good posture when you are walking. Walking with your head down or your hands in your pockets makes you look ‘closed’ and less approachable. Walk with your head held high and open up your shoulders.

5. Be relaxed!
When you meet and talk to people, you spend most of your time sitting. It is very important to give a relaxed impression. Lean back and make yourself comfortable. Don’t fold your hands, it signals that you are shielding yourself and makes you look unapproachable.

“It is gratifying to note that in less than 10 years of being a full-fledged university, Tai Solarin University of Education has become one of Nigeria’s best universities, consistently among universities at the top of the Nigerian university League.

This Institution has not disappointed in its mandate of producing successful graduates that have carved a niche for themselves in their different endeavours and continued to contribute their quota to the socio- economic development of our great nation,” the governor said.

He advised the graduates not to depend only on their certificates, but rather develop their intellect and horizon as well as equip themselves with the knowledge and skills to appropriate abundant opportunities that abound in the nation.

He restated the commitment of his administration to making education more affordable.

“our administration reduced school fees in all the ten state-owned higher institutions of learning by as high as 60 percent in some cases. The goal of this policy is to make education more affordable to more people and create a relief for all parents,” he said.

Senate Dismisses Obasanjo's Corruption Claims

The Senate has dismissed the allegation by former President Olusegun Obasanjo that the National Assembly was using constituency projects to siphon public funds. The upper House said Obasanjo’s claim was aimed at denigrating the sanctity of the parliament.

The Senate recalled that it was the administration of the former president, that approved the constituency projects to be built in the national budget which was executed by the executive.

A statement by the Senate chairman on Information, Media and Public Affairs, Enyinnaya Abaribe, therefore described the allegation of corruption against it by Obasanjo as unfortunate.

“President Obasanjo for the avoidance of doubt, was the initiator of the constituency project in the year 2000 as a means of ensuring that projects were fairly spread across the country using the Senatorial zones as the spring board.

“To ensure execution of the projects, President Obasanjo again factored the constituency projects into the annual budgets to be implemented by the executive depending on availability of funds. That is to say that no lawmaker ever comes close to the funds or even determine the contractor for the said projects or when the said contract would be awarded.

“So, it looks curious and surprising that President Obasanjo would turn around after over ten years of initiating such a project to allege that the National Assembly is performing the function of both the executive and the parliament.

“Is it not preposterous for anybody to believe that members of the National Assembly would against the provisions of the constitution with regards to application of separation of powers, award contracts ‘to their agents to execute’ and expect the Presidency under a President Obasanjo or any other President for that matter to pay for what they are not part of?

“Such allegation stands logic on its head, as it amounts to an indictment of the Presidency for wilfully contravening the budget laws by ceding its power to execute to the National Assembly, if it was the case.”

The Senate therefore challenged the former President to lay the facts out before Nigerians on why he suddenly thinks the National Assembly members now execute the national budget.

“It will also help to clear the allegation once and for all, if any presidency official not only from the time past but currently, could come forward and explain the true position of the so called constituency projects. Doing so would at least set the records straight,” the upper House noted.

Local Govt. Funds Now Free From States

Speaker, House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal has said that there would be no more joint account between local and state governments. He said all necessary steps towards ensuring that local governments get their allocations directly from the Federation Account have been taken.

Speaking during the sixth quadrennial national delegates’ conference of the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) on Tuesday in Lafia, Nasarawa State, Tambuwal said that the National Assembly would not reverse its decision on autonomy for local governments. This, he noted would enable them to provide dividends of democracy to the people at the grassroots, through the provision of social amenities, especially in the rural communities.

Tambuwal however clarified that only the local governments with duly elected officials would receive grants from the Federation Account.

“As representatives of the people, we are strengthening the institution of governance at the local levels, and not creating yet another Federation unit,” Tambuwal said.

Earlier in his keynote address, the National President of NULGE, Comrade Ibrahim Abdulkadir, had told the gathering that, “what we have today is a caricature of local government system where all manners of experiments, political and administrative are carried out. We make bold to say that this has retarded the development of this nation.

“The union wishes to lend its voice to that of millions of Nigerians to call on the members of the states Houses of Assembly to be on the part of history and confirm the bill being transmitted to them by their colleagues at the National Assembly which is the aggregate will of Nigerian people,” he added.

Messi Breaks All-Time Champions League Goals Record

Lionel Messi grabbed a hat-trick in Barcelona’s 4-0 win at APOEL Nicosia to become the all-time record goals scorer in the Uefa Champions League with 74 goals on Tuesday.

Prior to the historical night, the Argentina skipper needed a goal to scale former Real Madrid striker Raul Gonzalez’s record, but came up with his 72nd, 73rd and 74th goals in Europe all in one memorable night in Cyprus.

This record could change hands in subsequent games this season- bearing that Real forward Cristiano Ronaldo is just two goals shy of the new benchmark- but Messi has achieved the landmark in 91 games, 51 matches better than Raul, who scored 71 goals for both the Los Merengues and Schalke.

Lionel Messi Celebrates After Scoring His 72nd Career Champions League Goal Against APOEL on Tuesday.

Messi, who wore the captain armband on the night, converted the Catalans’ second goal of the evening from close range seven minutes after the half-hour mark, following Luis Suarez’s opener- the Uruguayan’s first for the club he joined last summer.
He then latched on to a Dani Alves through pass and masterfully dinked the ball beyond goalkeeper Urko Pardo in the 58th minute. He finished the Group F contest with a flourish three minutes to the dead, when he simply tapped in Pedro’s cut-back.

At just 27 years of age, the four-time Fifa Ballon d’Or winner now holds both scoring records in the Champions League and the Spanish League, having taken down Telmo Zarra’s record of 251 La Liga goals record at the weekend with a hat-trick in a 5-1 thrashing of Sevilla to improve to 253 goals on domestic front.

FG sets up ICT Nigerian Content Development Office

Federal Government says it has concluded plans to establish the Office of Nigerian Content Development in ICT, as part of concrete measures to promote IT local  products and services  in Nigeria and abroad.

President Goodluck Jonathan who stated this at the just-concluded eNigeria Conference organised by National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) in Abuja, explained that the Office would ensure judicious and sustainable implementation of IT local content development.

The President, represented by the Minister of Communication Technology, Omobola Johnson, underscored the growing importance of ICT to socio-economic development of the country.

He noted with satisfaction that the launch of the guidelines for Nigerian Content Development in ICT last year, has received tremendous support and interest from both local and global ICT stakeholders.

He pointed out that studies have been carried out by international partners which support the strengthening of local IT using public procurement.

According to Jonathan,  “There are numerous studies performed by the United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD) that support a strategy of strengthening the local IT sector by using public procurement.

“Government procurement of ICT goods and services is substantial and will continue to grow, as we deliver more and more services online, use social media to engage with citizens, and leverage ICTs to improve the productivity of civil servants and efficiency of public service delivery.

“A number of policy directives already exist – for instance government procurement of Personal Computers (PCs), below a certain configuration, must be sourced locally.

“Government also gives preference to meaningful technology transfer partnerships and collaborations between local and international companies, for the deployment of ICT services in government Ministries, Departments and Agencies[MDAs].”

The President, however, stated that the success of the local content initiative would depend on the deliberate and market driven opportunities through which Nigerian ICT products and services could be delivered.

While appraising the successes recorded in the sector, he said in the last two years, the ICT sector has made a direct contribution of 10.56 per cent to Nigeria’s  GDP.

“ICT also contributed a combined 2.56 per cent of added value to other sectors, thereby, validating our emphasis on a more strategic and deliberate focus on the ICT sector,” he said.

In creating market opportunities for Nigerian ICT products and services, he warned that the stakeholders must be mindful not “fall into the trap of protectionism or poor quality,” if there is a perception of a guaranteed market.

The President further commended a number of innovative programmes initiated and rolled out by NITDA to complement the local innovation ecosystem.

Kalu withdraws from senatorial race

…Cites imposition of candidates

Former governor of Abia State, Orji Uzor Kalu, has withdrawn from the 2015 senatorial race.

Kalu was seeking the ticket for the Abia North senatorial district on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated November 24, 2014 and addressed to the National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Adamu Muazu, the former governor said he was withdrawing from the race because the Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, was bent on imposing his handpicked aspirants on the party in the state.

He lamented that the governor deceived some high profile members of the party into resigning their plum positions to contest elections, only for him to ditch them for his handpicked candidates.

Kalu said: “Along the line, however, it became apparent that the Abia State Governor, Chief T.A Orji wants to handpick all candidates, both into executive and legislative positions. He wants to choose his own successor, fill the 24 House of Assembly seats, the eight federal constituencies and the three senatorial seats.

“Governor Orji knew ahead of time that he had a candidate in mind but deliberately allowed eminent Abia citizens like Dr. Alex Otti, GMD of Diamond Bank to resign from his lofty position when he should have advised him to remain there.

“He also allowed the Minister of Labour, Chief Emeka Wogu to resign and lose the Abia slot in the Federal Executive Council and other ministerial committees, he equally allowed two ranking members of the Senate, Senators Nkechi Nwogu and Enyinnaya Abaribe to pick gubernatorial forms when he should have advised them to go for re-election into the Senate.

“I find all these very disturbing. When Governor Orji was to be elected the first time in 2007, everyone knew where I stood three years before then that he was my anointed candidate. There was absolutely no ambiguity unlike now that he has allowed these people to lose their positions and resources chasing shadows. It is quite obvious that Governor Orji’s plan is to bring everybody down.”

While maintaining that there was no ward congress in Abia state, Kalu said the governor and his “collaborators” just compiled the list of delegates and this has forced some members of the PDP to defect to other parties.

He warned that it is dangerous for PDP to hang all its hope on one man, as elections are won by collective efforts and not as a solo run.

Falling Oil Prices: LCCI Advises FG To Cut Spending On Refreshments, Sitting Allownace To Save Nigeria's Economy

The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) has called on the Federal Government to put drastic economic measures in place, in order to help the country cushion the effect of falling crude oil prices. The chamber suggested further scrutiny in the way public funds are spent.

In a statement by its President, Alhaji Remi Bello, the LCCI commended the Federal Government for the fiscal and monetary policy measures taken so far to stabilise the macroeconomic conditions and minimise dislocations. It however asked that some very important additional measures be taken.

The chamber noted that there are several budget heads that need serious scrutiny, such as, consolidated revenue fund charges, service wide votes and presidential amnesty programmes.

According to Bello, others are: capital supplementation, debt service, refreshments and meals, foodstuffs and catering, honorarium and sitting allowance, welfare packages, as well as repairs and maintenance.

“All these budget heads have substantial amounts voted for them in the budget annually. Some of the provisions do not reflect the desired prudence in the management of public funds. Huge savings will be made if a proper scrutiny of these budget heads is made,” the LCCI president offered.

As bad as the current economic situation may be for Nigeria, Bello noted that some segments of the economy will profit.

“It is expected that fuel imports cost will drop. This should reduce the pressure of fuel subsidy payment on government. It is also expected that cost of diesel imports would reduce, depending on the degree of impact of the exchange rate on the imports,” he said.

The federal government had recently announced some austerity measures to as economic buffer, as global oil prices continue to fall. The measures were however targeted at civil servants, whose overseas travels for trainings was cut, and wealthy Nigerians, who will have to pay more tax on yatchs, private jets and luxury goods. The common man may also feel the measures as increment of Value Added Tax (VAT) has been hinted. No measure has really been directed at reducing government spending.

Bello however stressed that proper scrutiny of these budget heads will put Nigeria in a more secure place economically.

Did Anambra Governor's Wife Slap The Deputy's Wife?

Governor Willie Obiano and his wife, Chief Ebere Obiano

Anambra State government has denied a rumour making rounds that the wife of the governor, Mrs. Ebelechukwu Obiano slapped the wife of the deputy governor, Mrs Oby Okeke. The government said it never happened and blamed the false information on those trying to create tension in the state.

The special assistant to the deputy governor on media, Mrs. Stella Igboka, in a statement released on Friday said that the two women have a cordial relationship and therefore urged the people of the state to take the story being circulated on social media with a pinch of salt.

“Our attention has been drawn to a publication on the Internet alleging that Her Excellency, the wife of the Deputy Governor of Anambra State Mrs Oby Okeke was slapped by Her Excellency, the wife of the State Governor, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano at a function in Awka on Sunday last week.‎

“Her Excellency, Mrs Oby Okeke, had initially dismissed and ignored the purported allegation as a mere figment of imagination of rumour mongers, but having been pestered with calls and enquiries from friends and well meaning Ndi Anambra, It became necessary to set the record straight in order not to mislead the citizens into believing such a fabricated, unfounded and baseless story.

“There is no iota of truth in the said story, the publication is malicious and whoever concocted that does not mean well for Anambra state and should not be taken seriously.

“Those peddling propaganda only want to create unnecessary friction where non exists between the wives of the Governor and his deputy who are enjoying a cordial relationship and working harmoniously in supporting their husbands in their statutory obligations of moving the state to an enviable height.

“While assuring the citizens of Her Excellency’s Mrs Oby Okeke’s unflinching loyalty and support to the wife of the State Governor, Chief Mrs Ebelechukwu Obiano (Osodieme) there is need to state equivocally that no level of smear campaign or calumny would distract the amiable wives of the Governor and his deputy from working as a formidable team in support of their husbands for peace and progress of Anambra State,” the statement read.

Nigeria 2- 2 South Africa: Super Eagles Out of Africa Cup of Nations

Sone Aluko's double was not enough to send the reigning champions into next year's finals, with Congo edging into through behind Bafana Bafana from Group A

Nigeria are out of the Africa Cup of Nations 2015 despite coming from behind to hold South Africa to a 2-2 draw at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium in Uyo on Wednesday.

South Africa went into the clash against their Group A rivals having already booked their place at the 2015 finals, now due to be held in Equatorial Guinea.

However, though Sone Aluko denied Bafana Bafana a first competitive win over the Super Eagles, it was not enough to send Stephen Keshi's men into the finals next year, with Congo's win over Sudan enough to see them take second spot.

Bafana Bafana striker Tokelo Rantie nearly handed the visitors an early lead in the fourth minute after the Super Eagles defence made a mistake, but the Bournemouth forward ballooned his effort over the crossbar.

The hosts' first chance of the match came four minutes later, when CSKA Moscow winger Ahmed Musa beat Bafana defender Erick Mathoho for pace before unleashing a powerful strike which hit the crossbar, with goalkeeper Dareen Keet rooted to the ground.

In the 16th minute, Musa had two great back-to-back opportunities, finding himself in a one-on-one situation against Keet twice. However, the Kortrijk shot-stopper denied the 22-year-old attacker on both occasions.

Keet was again called into action in the 24th minute, and this time it was Nigerian forward Ikechukwu Uche, whose strike from 30 yards out was well gathered by the South African goalkeeper.

In the 41st minute, Nigeria were made to pay for their profligacy. Rantie broke down the left into the box, before beating Super Eagles keeper and captain Vincent Enyeama at his near post to hand the South Africans the lead.

Just three minutes into the second half, former Orlando Pirates striker Rantie grabbed his second, out-muscling Nigeria centre-half Azubuike Egwuekwe on the edge of the box then hitting the back of the net.

Nigeria had a chance to pull one back in the 59th minute, when Fenerbahce striker Emmanuel Emenike won a free header inside the Bafana box, but the 27-year-old forward's effort went straight at Keet.

The Super Eagles kept on pushing and pressing in search of a goal, and they were rewarded 10 minutes later, after substitute Aluko pounced onto a loose ball inside the box to make it 2-1.

In the 70th South Africa midfielder Letsholonyane was red-carded after collecting his second yellow of the night and Keshi promptly urged his side forward in search of the goals they needed.

The reigning Afcon champions grabbed a lifeline right at the death, with Aluko's low drive into the bottom corner offering a glimmer of hope.

However, time ran out on the game and Nigeria's hopes of a place in the finals, with speculation over the future of Keshi sure to follow.

Top 5 Celebrity Tweet Fights

1) DAVIDO AND WIZKID

We won’t be fair without opening this post without putting the beef of the year. Davido and Wizkid are two of the most respected artistes outside Nigeria and both got engaged in a tweet fight.

It all started when Wizkid put a picture of him in front of a venue for one of his shows in New York on instagram and put the caption “Just landed NYC! Let’s turn up! We do proper shows and proper venues” which Davido took as a shade at him as regards to a show he did prior to that time in New York. Both went on dissing each other on twitter and instagram. They also caused a controversy amongst their fans. Both say they are cool with each other now tho.

2) YVONNE NELSON AND LINDA IKEJI

The feud started when Linda Ikeji wrote on her blog that Yvonne Nelson and Iyanya were on set for a new movie which probably was not true and Yvonne Nelson took to twitter to tell Linda Ikeji to take down the supposed false post and Linda confirmed that it was Yvonne Nelson and her team that sent the information to her and that it was false and that Yvonne Nelson just wanted to be noticed.  Linda Ikeji’s sister, Laura, backed up her sister and also tweeted that 80% of Yvonne’s post are from or her team directly.

3)Don Jazzy and Wande Coal:

Virtually one year ago, Wande Coal released a song, Babyface, and immediately, Mavin boss, Donjazzy, tweeted that Wande Coal stole the song which he had previously recorded and that he could take him down if he wanted to and that all he wanted was his credits. What a lot of people did not know is that Wande coal already left Mavin records silently and had already started his own record label. This feud later led to the official drop of Wande Coal from Mavin Records

4)WIZKID AND SAEON

Earlier this year, Saeon and Wizkid were on a track together which received massive airplay and seemed to be a hit. All things seemed good with both of them till Saeon tweeted that wizkid collected 1.5M from her and still couldn’t get wizkid to retweet hype for her song for her. Wizkid replied saying both of them ain’t friends and it was basically a business deal both of them struck and that he was not obliged to help her with the hype of the song.

5)OLAMIDE, WIZKID AND LINDA IKEJI :

Earlier this year, Linda put up a post of Olamide expecting a second child and Olamide took to twitter to deny that he was expecting any  child and raved at Linda calling her oloshi, hater and all sorts. Wizkid too tweeted “Awon oloshi united!! o ma baje fun gbogbo won”. Linda who wasn’t the first to put up the post took to her blog to say that Olamide has been waiting for the right time to lash at her.

2015: Atiku Set For APC Presidential Primaries, Submits Nomination Form

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has submitted his expression of interest and nomination forms for the 2015 presidential election to the National Secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abuja.

Speaking at the party’s secretariat while returning the forms, Atiku expressed his appreciation to the Chairman for the opportunity to be the first to collect and first to return the forms.

“We will continue to be loyal and dedicated party members, no matter the outcome of the primary,” he promised.

“I hereby submit the expression of interest and nomination forms duly and accurately completed.”

In his response, the APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said he was at first nervous about the process leading to the party’s presidential primaries, but having listened to all aspirants, his confidence has risen.

“I want to say that with every passing day, the need for change is overpowering, made manifest from activities of people like you around the nooks and crannies of Nigeria,” he said.

The APC president prayed that the best man wins.

Atiku is in the race for presidency against four other aspirants: Muhammadu Buhari, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Sam Nda-Isaiah and Aminu Tambuwal.

Charles Novia writes Chika Ike's Manager, Serah Donald a stronge worded letter

Charles Novia writes Chika Ike’s Manager, Serah Donald a strong

Just barely 2 weeks after actress Chika Ike’s manager, Serah Donald took controversial filmmaker and critic, Charles Novia to the cleaners, following an article he posted on his blog.

Novia has hit back at the former, calling her an ‘industry lap-dog.’ Charles published his grand, strong worded reply on his blog.

Read: –

A SALVO FOR SERAH

I have mulled a bit about how to put out a riposte to a character called Serah Donald who went on an uncouth rage against my person on social media recently.

My first reaction was to ignore her as I saw through the statement that she really had nothing to say but perhaps wanted to gain some little fame through an open insult directed at me. And so I did.

But in retrospect (and knowing that most things put out on social media are usually
twisted the other way to suit such whims, as it were) I decided not to really let it rest but to perhaps give a riposte on some of her rabid tirades.

I use the word ‘rabid’ because the impression I have of this Serah, which still persists, is that she is somewhat of an industry lap-dog and one whom I have met formally only twice in my life and fleetingly too because I did not want some of her fleas around me.

I was introduced to her in 2007 in Los Angeles while I was attending a film industry convention on Nollywood where I was one of the Speakers on the positive trajectory of an evolving Nollywood. I vaguely remember some less-than-Plain-Jane looking lady staring at me in a manner which unsettled me a bit. To her, it could her been a fawning look but to me, from my perspective, it looked like a deviant character from a horror movie giving me the looks! It was my good friend, Stephanie Okereke ( now Linus) who was graduating from the New York Film Academy that period, who formally introduced her to me before I understood why she was awestruck.

‘It is a great honour to meet you, Sir’, Serah said and went on to gush about how she was a big fan of my movies and actually reeled out some of my hit titles she had watched. I believe I was told then that was a student of the New York Film School at Stephanie’s flat in Los Angeles where this Serah was perhaps squatting or was somewhat of a personal maid or something I can’t be bothered to remember   .

I completely forgot about this young lady and never saw her again till sometime in 2013 in an event organised by the Tourism Ministry at the Civic Centre in Lagos. I pride myself in having a retentive memory for faces and when Serah and her Principal, Chika Ike, walked up to my table to greet me, I instantly remembered her face, though now overtly padded with some hideous make-up. We exchanged pleasantries and she took my number.

I took the pains to reconstruct how I know this young lady so as to put to rest any other misinterpretation by the usual busybodies. And also to dismiss her silly insinuation in her statement that I was the one who met her in California!   On reading her guttersnipe against my person, the first thought which crossed my mind was that perhaps her Principal, Chika Ike, might actually be in cahoots with her in putting out that statement because if, as Serah claims, she is Chika’s ‘Manager’, (who in this clime and industry are usually glorified messengers) it might be the case of the tail wagging the dog.

This Serah Donald crossed a line of decorum by calling me names.  That is not new within the circle of her ilk who are sometimes critiqued by me in professional articles but what is irksome is her blatant disregard for seniority within the industry.  Whilst her lack of manners is actually a vindication of one’s perception that she actually might be obtuse by inclination, it also is proof of lack of home training.  And such reduces the value of a Lady’s Bride Price in this part of the

Interview: Tope Folarin

Tope at Library of Congress March 2014

Before Tope Folarin won the 2013 Caine Prize for African Writing, it might not have been completely clear that he was an African writer. His parents are Nigerian, of course, but he was born in Utah, where he grew up; he went to school in Texas and Georgia; he was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford; and he now lives in Washington, DC. As he told me, in fact, it hadn't occurred to him that his short story, "Miracle," would be eligible for consideration for the Caine prize, until the Nigerian novelist Helon Habila urged him to have it submitted. He did, and it won, and now he can certainly be an "African writer" if he wants to be.

Maybe the most interesting thing about Tope Folarin's Caine Prize is that there wasn't much controversy about it. It raised a few eyebrows that the award had gone to a story about Nigerian Christianity set in Texas and written by someone who was born and raised in the United States. But mostly the fact that the most high-profile prize for African literature went to a solidly American writer passed without heated polemic, at least that I saw. If you expected Tope Folarin's authenticity to be called into question, you would have been (mostly) disappointed. A few days before Folarin won, in fact, Maaza Mengiste wrote a blistering op-ed, in which she denounced the question of who is a "real" African:

Ramsey Nouah Talks About His Wife, Politics and Celeb Marriage Crashes

Ramsey Nouah

In a recent interview with Nigeriafilms, award winning Nollywood actor, Ramsey Nouah talks about keeping his wife from the limelight, joining politics and celeb marriage crashes. Enjoy the excerpts below:

Your wife is hardly seen at events, why is that so?

It is part of the reason, that is how we actually balance the equation, we try not to be all up in everybody face, everybody now knows my family and they can say this about her and about me that’s the beautiful way to actually keep it. We are 14-years in marriage and we are still going and I love that

A lot of your colleagues have veered into politics what’s your take on that?

I think they are looking out for changes, movie as you can tell, talks about the ills in the society, talks about problems that we find down the street; matrimonial problems either health problems, cancer, abandoned children. All these things we find in our society that we talk about in our movies. And some of our artistes are beginning to see that they can actually be a servant of the people to help rectify those things because they know their pain, so they are thinking we can go there and help and try and make a change that’s why they are doing it.

Tell us about the movie, ’30 Days in Atlanta?

It is a romantic comedy, actually shot part in Nigeria and part in Atlanta United States of America. AY played Akpos and I played his cousin.

How was it like acting alongside AY, the comedian or are you gradually becoming a comic actor too?

Well, the movie is a romantic comedy, and not just that it was fun for everybody.

What is your take on marriages of celebs that crash?

There is nothing I can say to them, I am a celebrity myself. Whatever I say compromises my judgement. I can’t tell celebrity how to hold on to their marriage, nobody can actually tell you how to hold on to your marriage. It is between the lovers; the man and the woman. It is either they are compatible or not. Most times, I would say to about 60 to 70 percent of the time showbiz actually is one of the reason why marriages crumble. So, I can’t tell them what they already know. Some people put extra effort and it just doesn’t work. In other words you realize that you’ve not found a compatible partner that’s why it’s so.

You are lover boy in movies, are you romantic in life?

Well, that’s left for my wife to decide, I don’t know if she thinks I am romantic.

Minister give kudos to TETfund

The minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has commended TETFund’s efforts towards the development of tertiary education in Nigeria.

He gave the commendation at the inauguration of TETFund sponsored, published, specialized higher education textbooks and TETFund guidelines on institution based research, in Abuja on Thursday.

Shekarau lauded the National Book Development Fund Intervention by TETFund to address dearth of quality books and reading materials in educational institutions.

He said this will encourage the production and consumption of locally produced books and journals.

“I want to thank the members of the Technical Advisory Group, who are in charge of facilitating the implementation of the book development fund.

“Their effort under the supervision and sponsorship of TETFund has made it possible for us to convert 20 manuscripts into specialised higher education textbooks.’’

Shekarau said that he was happy that TETFund had continued to provide sponsorship for Institution-based research (IBR) from 2009 to date.

He said that N5 billion has been allocated to public universities in the country to encourage institution based research.

According to him, 70 per cent of the allocated funds are still not accessed adding that the trend is not acceptable and does not show seriousness on the part of stakeholders.

“Research work remains the cardinal objective of any tertiary institution world over. Out of the allocation of N10 billion to universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for IBR, N7.8 billion is yet to be accessed.

“I want to urge the managers of our tertiary institutions to seize the opportunity presented by the launching of the TETFund guidelines to expedite efforts at accessing these funds.

Shekarau urged TETFund to ensure that the objectives of setting up the national research fund and the national book development were actualised.

Responding, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Mr Sulieman Bogoro, said the fund was doing everything possible to ensure that tertiary institutions were well equipped and up to standard.

Bogoro said that the fund received fewer complaints from tertiary institutions in the past four years in the area of infrastructure.

“TETFund has been able to upgrade and build more structures in all tertiary institutions in the country.’’

He also urged lecturers to come up with good research materials, as funds were available for anyone with good research proposals.

He added that the fund will continue to intervene in all tertiary institutions and fund more researches in the future.

Chairman, Board of Trustees, Musa Babayo, said TETfund had done so much to restore, rehabilitate and consolidate the education sector through different intervention models.

Babayo said that models such as the provision of infrastructure, capacity building, funding of educational research and other areas of education had added value to knowledge.

He said that the board’s staff and management of TETfund would key into the developmental agenda of government in moving the education sector to higher grounds.

Russia 2018: FBI to probe FIFA officials

Few hours after FIFA, the world football governing body, gave itself a clean bill of health, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has said it is stepping up the pace of a corruption investigation into senior leaders of FIFA, U.S. law enforcement officials have said.

The FIFA ethics committee Thursday announced that it was closing its investigation into alleged corruption in the 2018 and 2022 bidding process that awarded the World Cup to Russia and Qater, respectively.

According to reports from CNN.com, FIFA said its investigation found no corruption and has no reason to reopen the bidding process, but the FBI, which is leading the U.S. probe, is not ready to do the same.

Investigators are moving ahead with their probe, which could result in charges against senior FIFA officials, the U.S. law enforcement officials said.

FBI agents based in New York are moving ahead with their 3-year-old investigation, which will likely benefit from the findings of a former U.S. prosecutor, Michael Garcia, who was hired by FIFA to do an internal probe.

The FBI plans to seek access to Garcia’s report, which FIFA has not yet released. So far, the FBI has declined to offer an official comment on the development.

Garcia on Thursday distanced himself from the FIFA ethics announcement, saying: “Today’s decision by the Chairman of the Adjudicatory Chamber contains numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations of the facts and conclusions detailed in the Investigatory Chamber’s report. I intend to appeal this decision to the FIFA Appeal Committee.”

The FBI investigation includes the cooperation of a former top FIFA official who has provided documents and recordings of meetings with colleagues, law enforcement officials said.

The New York Daily news, which reported on the cooperation of former FIFA official Chuck Blazer, quoted Blazer as saying: “I just can’t talk about that.”

FIFA has long been dogged by allegations of corruption. In 2011, the FIFA banned for life Mohamed bin Hammam, a Qatari member of its top governing body, for ethics violations.

Consequenly, the organization says it is planning unspecific improvements in the way it conducts World Cup bids.

Why Does Facebook's Mark Zukerberg Wear the Same T-shirt Everyday

Why does Facebook owner, Mark Zuckerberg, who is one of the world’s richest men, wear the same gray-coloured style of t-shirt every single day?

The answer was revealed by Zuckerberg himself, during a recent Facebook Q & A session, The Telegraph reports.

He revealed that for him, wondering what to wear every morning or what to eat breakfast would be a waste of valuable time that he could be using to look after the world’s largest social network.

Revealing that he owns multiple versions of the same T-shirt, he said:

“I really want to clear my life so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community.

I’m in this really lucky position where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than 1bn people, and I feel like I’m not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life, so that way I can dedicate all of my energy towards just building the best products and services.”

Deep.

I want to be Africa's best player -Musa

Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa, has said he would be happy to win the Africa’s best player award.

The CSKA Moscow player was among the 25 players nominated for the Confederation of African Football African Player of the Year for 2014 on the back of his performances at the 2014 World Cup and with his Russian army club, africanFootball.com reports.

Last season, he won a second straight Russian championship with CSKA and has played a big role as the Moscow side aim to qualify for the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League.

He also scored two goals against Argentina as Nigeria reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the third time in the country’s history.

Last month, he fired another brace against Sudan in Abuja to revive Nigeria’s fading hopes of qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“I feel very happy to be nominated for African Player of the Year award by CAF. It is a great feeling to be appreciated. I will be so glad if I win it and I hope to emerge as the winner,” Musa told AfricanFootball.com

The late Rasheed Yekini was the first Nigeria star to win the award in 1993 and Nwankwo Kanu was the last to win it in 1999.

Other Nigerian stars who have won this prestigious individual accolade are – Emmanuel Amuneke (1994), Kanu (1996) and Victor Ikpeba (1997).

The winners of this award will be decided by votes from the head coaches and technical directors of the national associations affiliated to CAF.

The GLO-CAF Awards Gala will take place on January 8, 2015 in Lagos.

...Huntersola! I am a husband and a boyfriend to every girl in the school. Meet S.U U.I President.

I am a husband and a boyfriend to every girl in the school. No one is closer to me that the other. But once you are pregnant, I don’t know what to do o.

- HUNTERSOLA

.

The SU President spoke to StrictlyUI's Onah Buike and Charles
Oyadoke about many issues in the school and went a bit personal too. Excerpts here.

CAN WE MEET YOU?

 My name is Oluwafemi
Victor. People call me Huntersola. I am a 400level student of Agricultural
Economics, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. And I am a resident of the hall
of great men Kuti Hall and by His Grace, I am the Students’ Union President of the
University of Ibadan.

HOW HAS BEEN THE STUDENTS’ UNION PRESIDENCY BEEN? THE
CAMPAIGN AND EVERYTHING?

Glory be to God, it has been a wondrous task because this is
a platform that I have not operated in but so far so good, we are able to
balance a lot of things together. We have faced a lot of challnges, a lot of
difficulties but we are still progressing.

HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WHERE HANDED OVER THE MANTLE OF
LEADERSHIP OF THE STUDENTS’ BODY?

I had mixed feelings. I felt happy because I got what I have
been craving for but also I am afraid of the task ahead of me. Not because I
cannot do it but because it is not easy to oversee the affairs of this union.
This union is made up of different intellectuals – those that are better than
I, those that I am on the same level with and those below me. Despite this
fact, I am still the number one student of this university and it is my duty to
direct the union. So far, it has been good.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES AND THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF YOUR
ADMINISTRATION?

Co-incidentally, this is our 3rd month in office.
We were sworn in on August 6 and in the three months of our administration; we
have been able to defend the yearning of Uities. We have been having issues of
electricity and water but we have been able to tackle it well.

Other important things have happened. Now, we are working on
giving Uites a best ever union week. The Union Week will be on November 23 –
29. We are putting everything together to give them the best. The Vice
President is working on that.

Despite the fact that we are working against time having
been sworn in late last semester during exam. We are having issues but we are
trying to do our best so that they can feel us and we are still progressing. We
have been on the neck of the management to ensure that the welfare of the
students is taken care of.

WHAT DIFFERENCE WILL THE STUDENTS BE EXPECTING FROM YOUR
ADMINISTRATION AS THIS IS YOUR THIRD MONTH IN OFFICE?

We still have 6 – 7 months so we are working on something
new that would Wow UI. When we were coming in, we promised the students a
better representation and I think we are doing that very well. When we were
coming, we advocated for the inter-hall that has just ended. This was to
promote the spirit of sportsmanship and friendship among the students and I
think we achieved that. There are other things that are coming on board.

HOW HAS THE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT BEEN RESPONDING TO YOUR
ADMINISTRATION?

We are still at the threshold of our best. The management
are trying their best and they are being responsive but we are not yet there.
We go to them to work things out and so far, they have given us a listening
ear. But once they don’t do what we want, we know what we can resort to. We are
ready to do all sort of negotiations in order to improve our welfare and get to
the threshold of our best.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

I like administrative work. I love travelling a lot.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST FOOD?

It is quite funny, I love a local food. I love Amala and
Ewedu.
