Lawyers storm US airports as travel ban takes effect

Lawyers and rights activists took up positions at major US airports as a weakened version of President Donald Trump’s travel ban took effect late Thursday.

But there were no signs of the chaos that erupted when the first version of the restriction, derided as discriminatory against Muslims, was abruptly imposed back in January.

Attorneys working pro-bono set up makeshift, just-in-case legal aid stations — some with signs in Arabic — at airports serving New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington and other cities, news reports said.

Protesters angry over Trump’s immigration policies also turned out, with some in Los Angeles holding black-and-white placards denouncing Trump as a fascist.

But the first hours of the new version of the ban, as allowed by the Supreme Court, appeared to unfold calmly.

I Must ENTER Europe!!!

A 22-year-old Nigerian woman was left stranded in the Sahara desert while trying to enter Europe through the harsh desert. Her traffickers abandoned her in the arid zone for ten days.

She was given the nickname Adaora; according to the International Organisation for Migration, she was the only female among the survivors rescued on Sunday, May 28.

“She left Nigeria in early April hoping for a better future in Europe. “There were 50 migrants on the pick-up truck when it left Agadez for Libya, but only six are still alive today,” Niger Chief of Mission for IOM, Giuseppe Loprete, had said.

The lucky victim was lucky to have been given the chance to tell her story. “We were in the desert for 10 days. After five days, the driver abandoned us. “He left with all of our belongings, saying he was going to pick us up in a couple of hours, but he never did,” she recalled. Within two days, about forty four migrants had died. This made the others start walking in order to find help.

Obafemi Awolowo University Denies Increasing Tuition Fees

The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, has said that it was not planning to increase its tuition fee to N55,700.

The chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr. Deji Omole, was recently quoted as claiming that no fewer than 38 universities across Nigeria had jerked up their fees.

He reportedly named OAU as one of the schools affected by the increment.

In a press statement on Tueday, the OAU Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, explained that the tuition fee remained as increased three years ago.

Olarewaju said, “The attention of the authorities of the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has been drawn to a news item that ’38 Varsities increase tuition fees’, where OAU was listed among the universities that have increased their tuition fees.

Nigerian Universities Increase Tuition Fees

The Nation reports that at least 38 universities across the country have increased their tuition fees due to poor funding by federal and state governments.

The Chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, Dr. Deji Omole, stated this in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

 -University of Lagos (UNILAG) N14, 500 to N63, 500

-Ahmadu Bello University N27, 000 to N41, 00

 -University of Nigeria  N60, 450 to N66, 950

- Obafemi Awolowo University N19, 700 to N55,700 .

– Nnamdi Azikiwe University N20, 100 to N65,920

- Bayero University, Kano, N26,000 to N40,000

- University of Abuja N39,300 to N42,300

- Usman Danfodiyo University  N32,000 to N41,000.

The statement which assessed the two years of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, lamented that the government had made Nigerians poorer.

Omole said the public education was not taken seriously because “children of the rich and those in high offices” do not attend school in Nigeria.

The latest increment might be attributed to poor funding by the federal and state governments as ASUU poorly rated the President Muhammadu Buhari in the area of funding of university education.

ASUU also noted that it would be difficult for any Nigeria university to compete globally due to inadequate budgetary allocation to the educational sector.

XPloreNollywood: 7 Reasons Why You Should See Wonder Woman

Without sounding too corny or coming off as feminist, I was truly looking forward to Wonder Woman – the superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name and distributed by Warner Bros. At this stage, not sure who is winning the war between DC Comics (Warner Bros) or Marvel (Walt Disney), but between them, there has been a testosterone filled surge of male super heroes that unfortunately had women as backup and never in the lead.

There has technically been no superhero movie with a woman in the lead; yes there was Elektra, Black Widow and a host of others, but women were not in the lead.

Set in 1918, the film tells the story of Princess Diana, who grows up on the Amazon island of Themyscira. After American pilot, Steve Trevor crashes, offshore of the island and is rescued by Diana, he tells her about the ongoing World War. She then leaves her home to end the conflict, becoming Wonder Woman in the process.

Inspired! The Glory Comes After the Grind

  Hi guys!

For every effect, there is a cause (or a combination of causes), and success, greatness and all the good things of life you want to enjoy are no different.

If you want to shine, you must work. For the spotlight to be focused on you, you must have demonstrated an ability (over a period of time), to make the audience’s view worth their while.

That ability is developed through work – which involves practice, performance and most times failure.

Don’t give up. Continue working; the glory comes after the grind.

Even if you are shining now, keep working; there is no limit to how bright you can shine.

Cheers!

Portugal & Mexico sail into Semi Finals of FIFA Confederations Cup

Hosts Russia have been knocked out by Mexico in the FIFA Confederations Cup, after going down 1-2 in the last group match played today. Cristiano Ronaldo led Portugal also qualified after battering New Zealand 4-0, recording 7 points like Mexico and topping their Group A.

Russia had hoped for a miraculous berth in the semi-final if they had beaten Mexico by some goal margin. After conceding the first goal in the 25th minute, Mexico came from behind to beat the hosts. They dominated the possession and piled pressure on Russia such that they made Russian defender Y. Zirkhov earn the first red card of the tournament, after fouling a Mexican player.

In the Portugal-New Zealand match, Ronaldo who was voted Man of the Match for the third time opened scoring via a penalty in the 33rd minute. B. Silva doubled the advantage five minutes later, creating a scare after it appeared he had been injured. A. Silva and Nani increased the tally in the second half.

Both Portugal and Mexico will know their semifinal opponents tomorrow after the Group B matches. Chile and Germany are leading the group with four points each and there are slight doubts any upset can be created by either Cameroon or Australia, their opponents, who have a point each.

Why Nigerian universities are socially irrelevant – Okebukola

A former Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Peter Okebukola, said the country’s 153 universities were not socially relevant due to inadequate funding.

The don said this on Thursday at the third Distinguished Lecture of the Mountain Top University, Ogun State.

Speaking on the theme, “More investment, more harvest: Agenda for enhancing social responsibility of Nigerian universities,” Okebukola said his arrival at the conclusion that poor funding was the major factor responsible for Nigerian universities’ irrelevance to the country was due to his findings after a research carried out among them.

During the research, the don said he discovered that the country’s universities were doing “amazing things” despite operating on a shoestring.

He said, “I keep hearing people from all over the country and the world that our universities are doing nothing to the society, that they are not proffering solutions to societal problems like food insecurity, energy inadequacy, insecurity and so on. Some are asking, ‘why are our universities not solving societal problems?’ This criticism is too much.

“I was challenged and I carried out a research. I discovered that saying Nigerian universities are not doing anything in the society is not true. The truth is that good things are happening in our universities and the conclusion of the research is that our universities, based on the level of funding they are getting, are delivering very well and if we increase the level of resources available to them, they will deliver more and be more socially relevant.”

But if you want to close the joint account for some reason, how do you go about it? Will you both need to do this or can just one person close the account?

Splitting up: Going through a break up or a divorce can be tough and there is usually quite a lot to deal with. But once you have sorted out what is happening with your house and all the bills, you will need to decide what to do with your joint account.

It is important that you do this together as the money in the joint account belongs to both of you. One of you can’t close the account on their own until you have decided who gets the money.

It is not categorized as an intentional act to pleasure or entertain the body either…but over time, some humans have taken an extreme interest in this natural condition of the body and have made it their talent, hobby or sole purpose in life.

“We should not tolerate hate speeches or divisive comments.’’

7 Anti-aging Tips to Keep Your Black Beautiful

So we’ve probably heard the phrase ‘black don’t crack’ and there is some truth to that, especially when we look at the likes of Gabrielle Union and Pharrell Williams, who pretty much look the same as they did twenty years ago. Although our genes do have a lot to do with it, how well we take care of our skin, matters.

Here I’ll share some of the science behind that slogan and some anti-aging tips to keep your black beautiful.

Interestingly, skin of all races have the same number of ‘melanocytes’ (i.e the cells that produce melanin, which gives us our colour). So why don’t we all look the same?

The difference is that black people produce double the melanin from our ‘melanocytes’. This is a great because melanin helps us absorb some of the harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays that come from the sun, which is known to cause skin cancer and premature aging*1. Thus, the darker you are the less likely you are to age.

The broadcast deals, including a bumper domestic contract, ensured generous end-of-season payments for all 20 Premier League clubs who shared a total of £2.4 billion.

Figures on the league’s website showed Leicester, who earned £93 million after their stunning title success last year, received £116 million this season, when they finished 12th.

Second-placed Tottenham Hotspur earned about £145 million — slightly less than Manchester City and Liverpool owing to the difference in their “facility fees”, awarded for appearances on TV.

The question then will be, ‘Will I want to hire a person that can be a potential danger to the brand of my firm?’ and the answer to that question is quite clear.
