In a bid to reduce the pain and outright frustration victims of endometriosis go through, the Medical Director, Nordica Fertility Centre, Lagos, Dr Abayomi Ajayi has inaugurated a Endometriosis Support Group Nigeria (ESGN), a non-governmental organisation whose sole aim is to assist women challenged with endometriosis.
Ajayi during the inauguration said, “the support group, since 2005, has been at the forefront of internationally recognised peer review and professional services, programmes and resources; actively lobbying for better outcomes for these women affected with endometriosis. We help women understand the condition, learn about treatment options and best care practices, as this condition affects females from as early as puberty.”
He added that aim of the ESGN was to empower the people by creating awareness, educate, garner support, encourage volunteer initiatives, and provide support system through shared experiences; as well as proffer best treatment options to individuals.
“We are the first and only organisation focusing on this condition in Nigeria and the West African sub-region,” he said.
Endometriosis is a gynecological condition in which cells from the lining of the uterus (endometrium) appear and flourish outside the uterine cavity, most commonly on the membrane which lines the abdominal cavity, the peritoneum. The uterine cavity is lined with endometrial cells, which are under the influence of female hormones.
Symptoms of endometriosis are pain and infertility. The pain often is worse with the menstrual cycle and is the most common cause of secondary dysmenorrhea.
Endometriosis is typically seen during the reproductive years; it has been estimated that endometriosis occurs in roughly 6–10 per cent of women.
However, there is no cure for endometriosis, but it can be treated in a variety of ways, including pain medication, hormonal treatments, and surgery.
