Kenya’s Airtel Rising Stars team tot the Manchester United Soccer Clinic in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, returned yesterday promising to use the acquired skills to further their football careers.
The team included two girls – Lilly Owuor (Olympic High) and Mwanahalima Adam (St. John’s, Kaloleni Giriama) as well as boys Ibrahim Shambi (Kathungi High) and Gerald Oketch (Upper Hill).
The Dar clinic was conducted by Manchester United Soccer Schools coaches in conjunction with Airtel between April 23 and 27 at the Azam complex.
Owuor and Mwanahalima bahhed individual awards to be among the biggest achievers at the clinic which culminated in a tournament featuring the 13 countries on show.
Owuor bagged the Adnan Januzaj Award while Mwanahalima got the Ryan Giggs award for their excellent skills and discipline on and off the pitch. Owuor was also handed the Man of the Match gong alongside Shambi.
The players were excited by the theoretical and practical lessons offered. “It was very different from what we are used to back here,” said Owuor. “We were mostly taught on time management, discipline, movement when on and off the ball as well as dribbling skills.”
“I am certain the clinic has made me a better player and am eager to share my experiences with the rest of my team-mates.” Oketch said he is hoping the skills he acquired will be essential to the team as they seek to defend their title in August.
“We were also taught on how to be tough but fair to our opponents especially when in possession of the ball and I’m also eager to share this with my teammates,” Oketch said.
