Students of the University of Ibadan have
decried the exorbitant dues charged by the students’ associations. Most associations and hall executives have been seen charging ridiculous amounts of money for both new and returning students, with the new students suffering more of the brunt due to their ignorance.

Students of the Faculty of Arts are the mostly alarmed as their dues, both core and affiliated cost an incredible N 8000 which seems rather unprecedented as there are Faculties that pay as little as #700 while the Students’ Union, the mother body of all students have their
dues at #200. Several halls have been seen charging over N 2000 for dues
while for the Faculties, the pain of having to pay faculty dues before
registration has been disturbing especially with the Freedom of Association
provision in the Nigerian constitution!

The Students’ Union has however moved out
to ensure parity in the amount of dues collected by associations and has also
proposed that students’ be allowed registration in the Faculties without the
clause of the Faculty dues. The results are however yet to be felt across the
campus.
