Nigerian telecom authority is planning to ask telecom companies to stop selling new SIM cards as the network is getting congested and more users are joining the network every day. Information and Communication Technology Minister Omobola Johnson said that the telecom companies will have to improve their network and invest more in infrastructure.
The minister further added that fines on telecom companies are not enough. The government will take strict action to improve the quality of telecom services in the country.
Johannesburg headquartered MTN Group has been fined by the telecom regulator in Nigeria for providing sub-standard services to consumers. UAE’s Etisalat has also been fined in the recent times due to low quality services.
Bharti Airtel Nigeria, MTN Group, Globacom and Etisalat are major telecom operators in Nigeria. Some of the companies are investing in improvement of their network. The minister added that the government will push telecom companies to add additional terms on “quality of service” in future contracts.
Telecom networks have to invest heavily in infrastructure and for better coverage, more number of access points are required. As the number of consumers in largest market in Africa grows fast, the telecom companies need to offer better services.
