The struggle for control of the leadership of House of Representatives between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) continues, as both caucuses in the lower parliament hold strategic meetings today (Monday)
The PDP caucus meeting is expected to hold in Abuja while Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, who is presently holidaying in Lagos, is expected to preside over the APC caucus meeting in Lagos.
A dependable source in the parliament told Daily Independent in confidence on Sunday that the PDP meeting was called to discuss the workability of the mandate given to the caucus by the PDP leadership after a meeting held on Friday night.
The PDP leaders reportedly instructed the party’s caucus in the parliament to write and seek the reconvening of the parliament’s plenary for tomorrow (Tuesday).
The emergency session, it was gathered, was to have an agenda of a demand for leadership change following the defection of the Speaker to the APC from the PDP.
However, the law stipulates that an elected Speaker can only be impeached by two-third majority of the entire members of the parliament, which in this case amounts to 240 members.
But the PDP, though, in the majority, has just 195 members, with APC having 159, APGA two, Accord Party two and Labour Party one.
In this regard, the PDP needs 45 other members to join its ranks to be able to meet the constitutionally required 240 majority to effect the change of leadership, which can only be achieved through impeachment only if the Speaker refuses to resign.
