ANIMAL FACTS: What you don’t know about dogs


There are hundreds of official dog breeds in the world and even more breeds than you can count. Each dog has his own unique set of characteristics and personality. But one thing is certain these human companions have lots of amazing facts. Check out some of these interesting facts about dogs.
• Dogs love chasing their tails. They do this for several reasons like curiosity, exercise, anxiety, and predatory instinct or, they might have fleas! If your dog is chasing his tail excessively, talk with your vet.
• Dogs also dream Dogs and humans have the same type of slow wave sleep (SWS). The twitching and paw movements that occur during their sleep are signs that a dog is dreaming.
• Dogs have three eyelids, an upper lid, a lower lid and the third lid.
• Dogs curl up in a ball when they sleep due to an age-old instinct to keep themselves warm and protect their abdomen and vital organs from predators.
• In addition to sweating through their paws, dogs pant to cool themselves off.
• Dogs are capable of understanding up to 250 words and gestures; they can also count up to five and can perform simple mathematical calculations. The average dog is as intelligent as a two-year-old child.
• Dogs drink water by forming their tongue into the shape of a small cup.
• Dogs are fast in detecting sickness. Studies have shown that dogs can sniff cancers of the lungs, breast skin and bladder in humans.
