Brazilian soccer team's plane crashes in Colombia; 71 dead

Colombian authorities searched for answers Tuesday into the crash of a chartered airliner that slammed into the Andes mountains while transporting a Brazilian soccer team whose Cinderella story had won it a spot in the finals of one of South America's most prestigious regional tournaments. All but six of the 77 people on board were killed.

The British Aerospace 146 short-haul plane declared an emergency and lost radar contact just before 10 p.m. Monday (0300 GMT Tuesday), according to Colombia's aviation agency. It said the plane's black boxes had been recovered and were being analyzed.

The aircraft, which departed from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was carrying the Chapecoense soccer team from southern Brazil for Wednesday's first leg of the two-game Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional of Medellin. Twenty-one Brazilian journalists were also on board the flight.

Mr Olusola Teniola, the President Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) said that with the increase, other telecom companies would jerk up their prices, which would adversely affect subscribers.

Neymar starts for Barca despite Ferrari smash

Brazilian star Neymar shrugged off a minor road accident that damaged his Ferrari Spider to start Barcelona’s clash with Real Sociedad in La Liga on Sunday.

The 24-year-old striker hit trouble driving to the Barcelona training ground in rain before the team flew to the northern city of San Sebastian for the match.

Catalan television TV3 showed images of a dent on the left front of the sports car, which was parked on the side of a road.

“He had a car accident but was not injured and was able to continue his trip,” a source close to the club told AFP.

Neymar took his place in an unchanged Barcelona team alongside Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez.

Earlier this week Spanish prosecutors asked for a two-year jail term and a 10 million euro ($10.6 million) fine on charges of corruption during his transfer from Brazilian club Santos to Barcelona.

However, Neymar will have to be on his best behaviour against Real Sociedad as a yellow card would see him miss next weekend’s Clasico against Real Madrid through suspension.

Uganda is shutting down schools funded by Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates

A legal tug-of-war between Ugandan authorities and a for-profit international chain of schools has led to the education provider being ordered to shut down in a matter of weeks, leaving the lives of thousands of pupils in limbo.

Uganda's High Court has described the Bridge International Academies (BIA) -- which is funded by the likes of Microsoft's Bill Gates and Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg -- as unsanitary and unqualified, and has ordered it to close its doors in December because it ignored Uganda's national standards and put the "life and safety" of its 12,000 young students on the line.
The Director of Education Standards for the Ministry, Huzaifa Mutazindwa, told CNN that the nursery and primary schools were not licensed, the teachers weren't qualified and that there was no record of its curriculum being approved.
"The Ministry does not know what is being taught in these schools which is a point of concern to (the) government," Mutazindwa said.

Victor Moses gives Chelsea victory over Tottenham

Chelsea stormed back from behind to end Tottenham Hotspur’s unbeaten Premier League record with a 2-1 victory on Saturday that propelled Antonio Conte’s soaring side back into top spot.

Chelsea had seen Liverpool and Manchester City steal past them earlier in the day and fell behind in the 11th minute when Christian Eriksen became the first player to score past them in seven games.

But Pedro Rodriguez’s glorious curler and a Victor Moses tap-in either side of half-time gave Chelsea a seventh successive win — their longest such run within one season since January to April 2007.

APC: Contesting as a divided house

THE opposition All Progressives Congress, APC, is entering today’s contest as a divided house. This is quite unlike in 2012 when the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, which is one of the parties that merged to form APC, formed a united force to support its candidate, Mr. Rotimi Akeredolu.

Mr. Akeredolu is remarkably, also the candidate of the APC for today’s election.

The protracted internal crisis in the APC worsened after the party’s governorship primaries held on September 3 at the International Event Centre, The Dome, Akure.

PROTECTING YOU AND YOUR NEIGHBORS FROM YOUR OWN SMART HOME DEVICES

Are there Trojan horses in your home and in your neighbors’ homes and apartments waiting for signals to attack? The inherent vulnerability from untended internet connectivity is an unplanned, unsavory, and unacceptable consequence of the rapid proliferation of smart devices in homes. In an attempt to control or at least minimize security and privacy threats, a major industry group released recommendations for Internet of Things (IoT) manufacturers, especially those that make products sold for use in consumer’s homes.

The Broadband Internet Technical Advisory Group (BITAG) represents a broad cross-section of internet companies. The group’s purpose is to bring transparency and clarity to internet management and to the interactions among networks, applications, devices, and content that can affect users’ internet experience.

UNITED FANS 'AMAZE' MOURINHO

Whatever bad headlines Wayne Rooney manages to create, you always know there will be a retort around the corner to answer his critics.

He burst onto the Old Trafford picture with a European hat trick and against Feyenoord flashes of the old Rooney saw him become Manchester United 's all time number one European goalscorer.

It was a throwback to the devil-may-care teenage Rooney who instantly ensured Reds' fans fell in love with him against Fenerbahce 12 years ago as he slipped past his marker midway in his own half and at full pelt hugged the touchline with the after burners on that most thought had been extinguished long since.

He picked out Zlatan Ibrahimovic and dinked the return pass over keeper Brad Jones with all the cheek of that memorable night against the Turks in 2004 when he opened his account with a hat trick.

Apps that turn smartphones to TV remote control

In the 1950s came the first remote controls for TV. They were initially connected to a cable, but soon became completely wireless. Then came the VHS player, the DVD player, the DTT, the Blu-ray, among several others. The universal remotes saved us from needing a remote control for each device, but will it not be easier to control everything from a mobile phone? Of course. The best thing is that there are quite a few applications for this.

LG TV remote, VIERA remote and other TV manufacturers’ apps

Although the apps offered by TV manufacturers were not the first applications available, these are a safe option. Realising that mobile phones are today part of the very television experience for users everywhere, manufacturers decided to launch specific apps for their own TV sets.

Arsenal players rally around disappointed Alex Iwobi after his own goal last night

Arsenal on Wednesday night played out a disappointing 2-2 draw with PSG last night after Nigerian star Alex Iwobi got in the way of David Ospina and diverted the ball into the back of the net.

A win for Arsenal would have ensured Arsene Wenger's men top the group comfortably, but after Iwobi's own goal, PSG can now qualify as top leaders in the group with a win in their next game.

Iwobi, for the first time ever, didn't have a good game and upon being substituted, looked very sorrowful on the bench, but his teammates rallied around him and supported him.

“You’ve got to feel for him, but he wasn’t aware of what was behind him,” Arsenal midfielder Ramsey told reporters. “I feel for him but we’re in it together. “It was important not to lose and that’s what we managed not to do.”

Instagram introduces new features that mimic Twitter and Snap Tools

For the last six years, Instagram has been a repository for users’ most picturesque moments. But 2016 has been a year of reinvention for the photo-sharing social network, which has broadened what it lets people do with their images.

Now Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, is rolling out two more new features.

On Monday, it unveiled one feature focused on live video and one on ephemeral messaging. Both tap into a type of sharing popularized in recent years by companies like Snap Inc., which runs Snapchat, and Twitter, in its live-streaming video app Periscope.

“We want Instagram to be a place where you can share all of your moments, to create a pressure-free space to do so,”said Kevin Weil, head of product at Instagram. Weil said this philosophy, and the feature choices that stem from it, would encourage people to use Instagram for more than the selected, highly polished feeds for which it is known.

FG shifts 200,000 graduates’ employment date

The Presidency again on Sunday shifted the timeline during which it plans to employ 200,000 graduates, saying beneficiaries will resume work on December 1.

That was the second time the Federal Government would be shifting its position on the employment scheme which it earlier promised would start in October.

Two weeks ago, Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was quoted as attributing the failure of the government to engage the graduates in October as promised to the need to get the required equipment.

He then assured Nigerians that the graduates would be engaged “in the next two weeks.”

Mikel salary scares Marseille

French giants Marseille are ready to
rescue Nigeria captain Mikel Obi from his
Chelsea nightmare, but the player’s
reported £3.4m-a-year salary is set to
scupper the move.
Mikel, who joined the Premier League
powerhouse in 2006, has been frozen out
of the team by the Blues’ Italian manager
Antonio Conte, who took over the reins at
the Stamford Bridge side in the summer.
French outlet Le 10 Sport reported on
Thursday that Marseille manager Rudi
Garcia was desperate to sign the 29-
year-old Super Eagles midfielder in
January to boost his midfield options.
But Le 10 Sport claims the “the salary
of Mikel Obi would be problematic”.
Acoording to talkSPORT, Chelsea are set
to offload Mikel, has won two Premier
League titles, the Champions League and
four FA Cups with the club, as he is
deemed surplus to requirements by Conte.
Mikel told The Sun last week that he was
ready to quit the club during the January
transfer window for first-team football
elsewhere.
He said, “Yes, maybe people will say the
new manager was upset I left and went to
the Olympics, that I didn’t have a pre-
season with the team.
“He (Conte) probably thinks I don’t care
about the team, things like that.
“But I don’t want to use those excuses. I
have to keep training hard and make sure I
change the manager’s mind. If not, then
we’ll see what happens in January.”
Le 10 Sport said Mikel, who guided
Nigeria to a 3-1 win over Algeria’s Desert
Foxes in their Russia 2018 World Cup
Group B qualifier in Uyo on Saturday,
could move to China where he would be
guaranteed an annual salary matching
what he currently earns at Chelsea.

WhatsApp Is Now Rolling Out Video Calling For iPhone, Android And Windows Phone

WhatsApp has announced that more than one billion users will be able to make video calls on iPhone, Android and Windows Phone devices “in the coming days.” And to work out all the kinks, WhatsApp has been beta testing this feature over the last few months. This is a highly anticipated feature because WhatsApp users have been requesting it for years.

When you receive the WhatsApp app update with the video calling feature, you can try it out by tapping on the call icon at the top right corner of a chat. After tapping on the call icon, you will be asked if you want to make a voice call or a video call. Tapping on the “video call” option starts up a video chat with that WhatsApp contact. If you have not received the app update yet, then WhatsApp will simply make a phone call to that contact instead of presenting you with both options.

Moses, Mikel lead Nigeria past Algeria

Victor Moses scored twice while Chelsea teammate John Obi Mikel was also on target as Nigeria downed Algeria 3-1 to stay on course for the World Cup finals on Saturday.

Nigeria have a perfect six points from two games in Group B, four ahead of Cameroon who drew 1-1 at home to Zambia.

The Nigerians took the game to their opponents and were rewarded after 25 minutes when Moses was released by Mikel to fire past Algeria goalkeeper Rais M’Bolhi.

The Super Eagles doubled their lead three minutes from the interval when Mikel controlled the ball at the top of the box and after a moment of hesitation, drilled it beyond the Algerian keeper.

Algeria pulled a goal back in the 67th minute, when Nabil Bentaleb smashed home an unstoppable shot from distance.

Man of the match Moses then put the game beyond the north Africans in stoppage time, when he smashed home off a low cross by substitute Ahmed Musa.

The outcome could have been a lot different had the visitors made the most of two clear-cut chances in the first half.

First, Schalke 04 star Bentaleb missed a sitter from inside the Nigeria box after 36 minutes.

And minutes later, Riyad Mahrez came close to getting on the score sheet, but his shot just missed the target with the Nigeria defence at his mercy.

When Algeria pulled a goal back, they pegged their hosts in their own half with the dangerous Yacine Brahimi tormenting the Eagles defence and Mahrez in charge of the midfield.

Nigeria goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi, in for the injured Carl Ikeme, tipped away a free kick with nine minutes left on the clock.

Americans are getting set for a long Election Night of waiting to see who the 45th US president will be — Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump.
Here are the key things to know: what it takes to win, which states are the ones to watch, and how long it all might take for the winner to emerge:
The magic number is 270

Rather than one big nationwide election, this is really 51 small ones — in the 50 states and the US capital Washington.

As the results come in, they will form an electoral map that colors each state red for the Republicans and blue for the Democrats.

Robots distort Trump support on Twitter, says study

Software robots generated a significant number of Twitter messages in support of Donald Trump, distorting the Republican presidential nominee’s backing on the social network, a study showed Monday.

The study by University of Southern California computer scientists found that both Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton had supporting messages from “bots” but that Trump had more bots and produced more tweets.

“This generates a stream of support that is at staggering odds with respect to the overall negative tone that characterizes the 2016 presidential election campaigns,” researchers Alessandro Bessi and Emilio Ferrara wrote in the online journal First Monday’s November 7 edition.

London police arrest 33 at masked-marcher event

The protesters began their march at Trafalgar Square, heading toward Westminster chanting, "Whose street? Our Streets!"
Marchers, many wearing Guy Fawkes masks, were under a strict three-hour time limit this year as a result of battles between police and protesters last year that led to more than 50 arrests.
According to The Telegraph, Scotland Yard said the 33 arrests at this year's march included three for possession of an offensive weapon, 14 for drugs and two for the non-removal of a face mask. Fireworks were set off in the crowd near the Houses of Parliament and bottles were thrown.

"If anybody has a country to go to, let him go" - President Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said if anybody has a country to go to, let him go, as "we will stay here and salvage our country."

According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari stated this on Tuesday, November 1st, at the State House in Abuja during a high-level meeting with leaders and other stakeholders to seek ways to end the militancy and the sabotage of oil infrastructure in the Niger Delta region.

With Win Over Barcelona, Manchester City Begins to Write Its Own History

It was not an end — Pep Guardiola was quite clear — but a start. The night Manchester City beat Barcelona, the night “the best team in the world” was swept aside by Sergio Agüero, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan did not represent the end of Guardiola’s work.

This was not a vindication of his style and his philosophy, or the final proof that he can work his magic without an army of sorcerers, as he had at Barcelona and Bayern Munich. Tuesday’s 3-1 victory does not mean that the mission set by Manchester City’s owners, to turn a once-unfashionable team into a member of the elite, is complete. It does not make history. It simply begins to write it.

In England, as in continental Europe, every club interprets its relationship to the Champions League differently. Real Madrid sees it as a divine right, as though it is the natural state of affairs that the trophy should reside at the Bernabeu and that any other outcome reveals something gone badly awry with the universe.

Linda Ikeji Social: First Impressions

A few minutes ago, when I heard that Linda Ikeji had launched a social networking platform, I was blown away. I almost clicked my heels, because you have to admit, it is quite ballsy and ambitious. What if she actually blows? If you think about how far she took her blogging, you’d be wise not to dismiss this so soon.

I knew about 20 people who read her blog everyday and I was sure they would sign up for her social media platform. Until I decided to sign up and see for myself. Needless to say, I was completely uninterested in joining yet another social media platform.

CBN warns against patronage of ‘wonder banks’

The Central Bank of Nigeria on Monday warned Nigerians against patronising what it called ‘wonder banks’, stating that their activities were not regulated by it.

The Head, Consumer Protection Department, CBN, Hajiya Kadija Kassim, stated this during a mentoring programme for students of the Government Secondary School, Suleja, Niger State.

The mentoring programme, which was held simultaneously in over 200 schools, was part of activities to mark the World Savings Day.

The apex bank’s warning is coming at a time when the huge unemployment situation in the country is making a lot of people to take interest in an online investment scheme tagged: ‘MMM Federal Republic of Nigeria (nigeria.mmm.net)’.

The platform has embarked on an aggressive online media campaign to lure the investing public to participate in what it called “mutual aid financial network,” with a monthly investment return of 30 per cent.
