Southampton Signs Austin: You snooze, you lose

Southampton have announced the signing of Queens Park Rangers striker Charlie Austin for a fee of around £4million.

After scoring 18 goals in 35 Premier League games in the 2014/15 season, Austin had been courted by Newcastle, Crystal Palace and West Ham in the summer. QPR had wanted £15million for his signature.

The striker pledged to stay at Loftus Road despite their relegation to the Championship however, and even insisted he would not leave the club in January a few weeks ago.

But, with the 26-year-old’s contract expiring this summer, QPR had reportedly grown wary of losing the striker for free.

Austin was also keen to move back to the south coast, and although he was happy to wait until the summer to move, QPR pushed for a sale this month.

Austin has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at St Mary’s. Could he be replacing Shane Long? Probably not.
