Governor Okorocha appointed Sharley Igwe as principal protocol

Governor Okorocha and actresses sha! Lol. Months after sacking Nkiru Sylvanus as Special Assistant on Lagos Affairs, he has appointed another Nollywood actress into his his cabinet. This time it's 25 year old ex-Delta Soap model, Shirley Igwe. Shirley is now working for the Government of Imo State as Gov. Rochas Okorocha's Principal Protocol Officer. Her new appointment would entail her coordinating the governor's daily itinerary, ensuring his comfort and that of his visitors every day. She resumed her appointment in September. Congrats to her!!

A section of the ailing NNPC refinery in Warri, Delta state was gutted by fire this morning, though I hear the situation is now under control as fire fighters have been battling all morning to put the fire out. No word yet on what caused the fire ...details later

The truth about Governments position on ASUU Strike- Okonjo

This is a press statement from the Federal Ministry of Finance about the ongoing ASUU strike. It's been four long months (Quite shameful I must add) with no apparent resolution to the conflict in sight...and some people are blaming the Minister of finance Dr Okonjo Iweala for what's going on. Some people in ASUU have been distributing flyers with abusive messages against Dr Okonjo-Iweala and now the ministry is issuing a statement about it, saying the minister is not the problem. I'd rather read about when ASUU is calling off this strike to be honest. Find the press statement below Contrary to some recent media reports, the Federal government has not adopted a take-it-or-leave-it approach in its negotiations with ASUU. Rather, the approach is focused on positive engagement and achieving sustainable solutions to the challenges facing higher education in the country. That is why President Goodluck Jonathan recently appealed to ASUU to respond to government’s positive steps by calling off its strike in the interest of suffering students and parents.

“MY NIGERIA; WHAT IT MEANS TO ME”

In the year 1914, this country came into being as a result of the amalgamation of the northern and southern protectorates by Lord Frederick Lugard. And on the first day of October, 1960, this same country was granted her independence from the British imperialist and gained her republican status in the year 1963. Since then, many people have been seeing Nigeria as a failed nation. A nation, Awolowo described as "a mere geographical expression"1 was sadly referred to by Ahmadu Bello as “the grave mistake of 1914”2 and by Tafawa Balewa as a "mere British intention"3. From blogs to forums and all over the social networking websites, the saddening stories of the Nigerian state have been widely published by various political pundits. Unfortunately, they failed to realise the truism of the Chinese proverb that states "fine or not, it is my country's wine." It is true that the Nigerian nation has been facing a lot challenges. It is true that plagues dance ballet at her doorstep. It is true that Nigeria is neck-deep drowning in the messy waters of social and economic uncertainties. According to the UNESCO, 70% of her population may be living below the poverty line of one dollar a day4. It is no doubt that poverty may be singing lifeless tunes for many of her citizens to dance. Though the former education minister, Dr. Sam Egwu has said that over 80% of the Nigerian Youths are not just unemployed but are also “unemployable”5 and unemployment may have become a natural phenomenon to the populace. It is true that despite the fact that Nigeria is the largest oil producing county in Africa, her currency keeps devaluing and she still maintains her prestigious position as one of the twenty poorest countries of the world. What a feat she may have achieved! Our health centres may be synonyms for death-centres and our power sector may be plummeting into an eternal chasm of darkness. Our economy may be rolling down the steep slope of diminishment and our education may be in a sorry state that when one put a pen to paper, it may not be anything to write home about. Our land flows with milk and honey, yet our skins may bear the horrific tales of hunger. Many may see Nigeria as a land cursed with bad leaders and selfish public officials. Many, like Dr. Tunde Bakare may see Nigeria as a nation "under attack by the twin forces of violence and corruption, a state of anarchy and lawlessness".6 Nigeria, to many may be a nation constantly baptized with bloodcurdling waters of explosive devices by the terrorists, a nation that is miles away from peace. To many, Nigeria may be that nation where tribalism, nepotism and gruesome ethnic conflicts have a field day ruling. Nigeria, many may see her as a country that has plunged into a "peculiar mess"7 that recovery is almost impossible! However, I see my dearest country from a very different angle. Nigeria, to me is like a little baby that has to go through her teething period and I have an undaunted hope that the future will be bright. Nigeria, to me is a fatherland that we all are responsible for building a glorious prospect for. It is to me a motherland that all of us have to create for her, an everlasting happiness. Nigeria, to me is not the mistake of the "erroneous marriage of 1914"8, because I am a product of that marriage and I am not a bastard. But, Nigeria to me despite all the ranging chaos and crisis is still a nation "bound in freedom, peace and unity."9 To me, Nigeria is a land of tolerance, where a family will consists of a Muslim father from the south and a Christian mother from the North, with their children divided between the two religions and yet living in peaceful co-existence! Nigeria to me is like the palm seedling battling with weeds and unfavourable weather conditions but which in the end is bound to grow to a tall palm tree smiling to the grandeur radiance of the sun. Nigeria to me is still that colossal giant of Africa, who was, who is and who will continue to be the symbol of a glorious Africa. Nigeria is a great nation of good people and industrious youths who are constructing brilliance landmarks in their homeland and all over the world. Nigeria to me, is a land of resilience where despite commotions and myriads of setbacks that bedevilled her, she still stands tall, unshaken from her roots. Wole Soyinka once sang, "I love my country, I no go lie. Na inside am I go live and die…”10 Nigeria to me is a country worth being proud of, it is a country many have died for, many are dying for and many will die for. It is a country worth dying for, a country I love and which I will continue to treasure as long as I live. Though saddening happenings may have pushed some people to refer to her as "a wasted generation"11 but I beg to disagree that Nigeria is not wasted. Nigeria is a fertile and a fruitful land. In conclusion, it is no gainsaying, that Nigeria is a country many foreigners wished to be part of. To me, Nigeria is a land of rich cultures and languages. Nigeria is a land of boundless opportunities, a land of freedom and a land of peace. Nigeria to me is like a stone, which the builder had earlier rejected but which has no place now save to be the corner stone. How well again can I sing melodiously what Nigeria means to me than to agree with Chinua Achebe that "...in my next reincarnation I want to be a Nigerian again"12

John Dumelo donates supplies to deprived school in Cameroon

Ghanaian leading man, John Dumelo donated school supplies including pencils, chalks, erasers and exercise books to over 100 pupils of St. John Of God Catholic School in Cameroon, via his John Dumelo Foundation. The school, located in a town called Bonadikombo, around where the actor had been filming, also got an unspecified amount of money to help in running the school. John Dumelo visited Cameroon right after his short trip to the US, and he was in the coastal town of Limbe where he shot a movie as well as part of his upcoming reality TV show. He promised to go back to help renovate the school building. More photos after the cut... This is the second country outside Ghana that the actor and fashion entrepreneur has expanded operations to. He has also been in Sierra Leone, where he did similar donations about 3 months ago. In Ghana, he has donated to schools in rural areas including the North, Eastern, Western And Central Regions. According to John, “I also started the John Dumelo Scholarship Scheme for university students starting with the University of Ghana last year. Hopefully more students will be included in this scheme in the coming academic years.” So far all the activities of the foundation in the last 5 years of existence have been self-funded by John Dumelo.

Gilbert Probst is Professor for Organizational Behavior and Management and Co-Director of the Executive-MBA program at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. He is also Managing Director at the World Economic Forum and Dean of the Global Leadership Fellows Program (World Economic Forum). Professor Probst is an award-winning author and editor of a number of books and articles in prestigious journals (Organization Science, Academy of Management Executive, and European Management Journal). He served as a consultant for various major companies such as Kuoni, Holcim, Hewlett Packard, Siemens, Winterthur Insurance, Deutsche Bank, DaimlerChrysler or Swisscom, and has been a board member for Holcim, Kuoni and several SMEs. Research projects of Prof. Probst and his team focus on four pillars: organizational growth, ambidextrous organizations, learning organization, and public-private partnerships. In order to intensify the research regarding organizational growth, the Center for Organizational Excellence (CORE) has been created. Its aim is to analyze the major growth issues organizations face. Investigations on the subject of ambidexterity strive for resolving the difficult task of balancing simultaneously exploitative activities (daily business) and explorative activities (innovations). The third research area focuses on knowledge management as well as on learning organizations. Fruit of this research area is the creation of the Geneva Knowledge Forum in 1995. ASUU STRIKE: A CASE OF TWO ELEPHANT BELLIGERENT.

In 2009, the major bones of contention between the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) were salary increase and adequate funding of the Nigerian universities. Today, as the strike embarked upon by the varsity lecturers lingers the pages of tabloids are awash with similar agitations, such taking over the air and space. It is a known fact that the university educational system is an integral and important part of any nation that expects progress, development, and advancement not only in the entire polity, but also at the level of education, worldwide. This statement is trite and incontrovertible. Recently, one of the ASUU members spoke on a radio programme affirming their agitations are simply intertwined and inseparable: the release of about N90billion for earned allowances, and provision of adequate facilities to improve and revivify the Nigerian universities. Before his affirmations, already the presenter read out the report of the National Economic Empowerment, and Development Strategy (NEEDS) about their findings at the Olabisi Onabanjo Universities (OOU). The report painted the emergency situation in the nation’s tertiary institution in Ogun State. In fact, the report clearly corroborated the agitations of the Academic Union that if the Universities are not well-funded in terms of human and materials resources, then lecturing would no longer be a lucrative and interesting one, as lecturers and students alike would always have reasons to run to places with state-of-the-art facilities. Further questions were asked to suggest whether the varsity lecturers would soon end the lingering strike, but the ASUU man affirmed they were bent on continuing the strike, being one that had forced the students out of the Universities, claiming one life, an ex-student of the University of Ibadan, after the authorities of the University ordered the students out of the University, due to the strike. She bade the world adieu, en route her abode where she hoped to meet friends, family members, and well-wishers, but as fate would have it, she met her demise: a case of two elephants fighting. It was made known that trillions of naira form the crude oil revenue the country realized in recent times, and that the fund the government had claimed to be injecting into the varsities is the fund already made available in the Education Tax Fund (ETF) in that the government is not being sincere. Referring to the statements by the Minister of Finance, and Coordinating Minister for Economy, Mrs. Okonjo Iweala, the Federal Government could not afford the ASUU’s demands; that such would affect the economy with other contending needs, but ASUU insisted the Federal Government could afford it, and even more. It seems the face-off may be taking another dimension which is that of blackmail, threats, half truths, and insincerity from either party. This piece is first interested in the issues or some of key issues as already highlighted. This piece would also peruse into the effects of such on the Nigerian students who are constantly and variously referred to as the future leaders. Down the memory lane, the issue of ‘gentleman’ agreement entered into by the Academic Union, and Federal Government started before 2009, with the Union accusing the then Yar’adua administration of provoking the 2009 ongoing strike by refusing to sign an agreement it had earlier reached with the Union through the Gamaliel Onosode-led Government negotiating team. One of the bulletins released by ASUU then read: ’’Our schools from the primary levels lack adequate academic staff because of poor condition of service that discourages several thousands of qualified persons from taking up teaching jobs. Deficiency in facilities and human resources is a major factor that seriously limits the access of qualified students to University education. For instance, just about 153,000 of 1,050,000 qualified candidates representing about 15 percent gained admission into Universities in 2008/09 session. ‘’ Pertinently, if the ASUU’s agitations are truly towards educational improvement, the case of two elephants fighting might be a positive development and gains for the students and the entire educational sector. However, if ASUU is only fighting for earned allowances and what could trickle down their pockets then of what benefits would such be to the students that had stayed at home for more than two months? ASUU opined that there would be students’ unrest if the Federal Government failed to honour the 2009 agreement. One may ask why would there be students’ unrest. During the ongoing industrial strike action, it was gathered that the Federal Government summoned the Vice Chancellors and Pro-Chancellors to a meeting on how the demands of ASUU could be met. One means discussed, as learnt, was how the Governing Councils could raise the funds which may result into increment in fees payable by the students. One would be reminded of the 2008 hike in school fees in the University of Ibadan that led to students’ unrest, which culminated in disciplinary cases and other pockets of increment in other institutions in the country then and after: case of two elephants fighting. Also, this session in the University of Ibadan, though the school fees could have been increased, but that they were not increased made Prof. Isaac Adewole send students outside the University with some facing disciplinary action, and various degrees of victimization, oppression, and threats ongoing in the University due to students’ agitations: possible case of two elephants fighting. Moreover, as stated, the main concern must always be how this strike would be beneficial to all parties at the end of the day. Who would or would have suffered the brunt: the students, lecturers, government or all parties? Already, the students are at home possibly playing games, watching movies of different sorts (from Nollywood, Hollywood, and Bollywood) visiting aimlessly, engaging in unprofitable ventures and acts or planning how to run away from their fatherland. ASUU and the Federal Government must consider these. Truths, sincerity and openness are needed at this juncture. ASUU has its blames as well as the Federal Government. It is glaring in some higher institutions that the facilities are dilapidated, and obsolete if available at all. General overhaul of not only the tertiary institutions but also the primary and secondary institutions is urgently and sincerely required. Countries like the United Kingdom, United States of America, and Canada take our best brains, not that the brains would immediately become Kings and Queens in those countries, but the brains are being attracted by alluring incentives like pay, studying, working environment coupled with unlimited world of opportunities that facilitate studying and learning. In the words of Prof. Niyi Osundare, a Professor of English Language in the United of States of America, ‘’this country wastes human resources.’’ One thing notable is that the Academic Union must look inward about its ranks and files in terms of sincerity and dedication at work. There are reports of lazy lecturers, and victimizing ones that form part of the Union. It had been said that out of these lecturers, some take up jobs in the existing private universities, conduct researches for other institutions or bodies, or travel out of the country when they are to perform academic activities they are paid for. Researches or other academic activities are imperative, but they must not be at the expense of the ones they are paid for. ASUU must always device other means possible to obtain its demands, as one may conclude that students are always being used as shield. Furthermore, it seems the Federal Government has not woken up to the reality that not only ASUU, but majority of critical and informed Nigerians know that much fund is accruing from the crude oil and its products. Any average Nigerian that goes into politics believes that the crude oil and its products form the bulk of National Cake, hence the striking lecturers are asking: ‘’where are the excess profits from the crude oil when you are saying you cannot pay us? Are you storing them up for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or for 2015 elections and beyond? Until all the issues are resolved, it may be a case of two elephants fighting the grass at the fighting arena suffers. Before I rest my case for now, an instruction must always ring in the ears of the various students’ leaders in the country. Agitations are on, and parties would want to win at all cost. ASUU expects the students (who are bearing the brunt already), parents, guardians and all Nigerians to support and understand their agitations and demands, so also the Federal Government would expect the citizenry to understand that ASUU’s demand s are unrealistic. Some of those who might either support or oppose the strike are the students’ leaders. Hence, the students’ leaders must understand what are and why the agitations plus the overall effects on the educational sector. They must not, as a matter-of-factly, turn the present strike to ‘moneyed’ one to either support or oppose any party by other party. The case of oil subsidy removal in January, 2012, is still fresh in our memories, as many Nigerians see the NLC (Nigerian Labour Congress) and TUC (Trade Union Congress) elements as saboteurs. We must know that already the time of young and promising Nigerians are wasting and ticking away in a land where the rich are getting richer and the poor constantly get poorer due to inequalities, and unjust tendencies. Why waste the time of those unsure of brighter future, employment, equal opportunities, and security of lives and property for themselves and their fellow Nigerians? By Dolapo Stephen Ladoye. Gov.Fashola tender APOLOGY.

The deportation of Igbos to Anambra state by the Lagos State Government a few months back was what sparked off all the Igbo/Yoruba bashing that happened online recently, most popular was the piece written by controversial former minister Femi Fani Kayode, which led to him being 'sued' by one prominent Igbo lady..:-). So anyway, yesterday governor Fashola apologized to the igbos for the incident...and FFK doesn't think he should have apologize. Read what he wrote below... There can be little doubt that the relocation of the 19 igbo destitute from Lagos state a few months ago was a lawful exercise and that it was done in the interest of Lagos state. Consequently I do not believe that Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola ought to have tendered any form of apology whatsoever to the igbo for what he did. The only redeeming factor is the fact that the apology was obviously designed simply to calm frayed nerves and I commend Fashola for that gesture if nothing else. I say this because my understanding is that he apologised NOT for the deportation itself but for ''the misunderstanding that arose from it''. There is a world of difference between the two. CRIPPLED UNION: WHO IS TO BLAME? BY KAY BELLO Recent findings show that the Students’ Union of University of Ibadan seems crippled, and the centre may no longer hold. Things could have fallen apart, but some still believe there could be succour. It is important at this very moment to look deeply into what or who could have been responsible for this seemingly crippled Union. Findings revealed that issue that really took centre stage during the last Students’ Union Student Representative Council (SUSRC) sessions was the NANS ticket- that of the National Association of Nigerian Students. Although there were other deliberations, but the SRC of 2011/2012 academic session had never called to order the incessant disappearance of some Executive Council members of the Students’ Union from their duty posts. Reliable sources had it that the incumbent President, Edosa Ekhator, had literally abandoned his office, and always sneaked in and out to the University College Hospital whenever, being a medical student. His counterpart, the Assistant General Secretary, Portia Osudji, also always followed suit to UCH so that they would not become quack doctors who might cripple patients by injecting them where dangerous. The belief or expectation is that there should be some form of delegation of responsibilities if one executive member is not around, but that is not the case, as it has become a deception where the Vice President of the Students’ Union, Miss Collete Anate, never said she was deputizing for the incumbent President. If one asks any of the executive members about the whereabouts of Mr. President, they would prefer to fight you back, and/or accuse, you of criticizing their regime as if the Students’ Union has become their personal property they must protect jealously with all their hearts. Now that the Union seems to be in the cage, and waiting for rescue mission by stakeholders, issues that have piled up to be solved are: the rusticated Fisheries department students who stood up for their right; the fact that there would be kitchenette system; the abolition of cooking in the rooms; resuscitation of cafeteria system in the halls of residence; the disappearance of the executive members from their offices; Mr Sunday Saanu’s Squealer-like write-ups that praise the Vice Chancellor and condemn the students as if he had been paid to always attack students but not the members of staff which he is one too; non-availability of executive members to address fundamental issues in the University of Ibadan concerning students especially the indiscriminate levies upon the Queen Elizabeth II Hall students over wall defacing ; the non-recognition of the elections held at the level of Queen Idia Hall; the fact that the President, Edosa Ekhator, and others were queried over a programme to be held under Students’ Union name; sudden demand for payment from PYTP and IT students residing in Mellanby Hall during the holiday; the fact that it might be difficult at times to gain access to the Vice Chancellor to address certain issues due to protocols and bottlenecks created; the use of Mr. Sunday Saanu as an instrument of propaganda; the use of dictatorship to address matters by the authorities; threats from the authorities to either suspend or expel students through the students disciplinary committee; long withdrawal list of students; the long list of final year students who would not graduate, among others. Above all, who is to blame for a crippled Union? To start with, is the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Adewole to blame for the crippled Union? Did he orchestrate the fall of the Union, and the imposition of the incumbent President from his constituency- that is the University College Hospital? Then, what happened to the issue of Mr Adejare who was disqualified as a Students’ Union presidential aspirant in the last Union’s election? Was Jare seen as one who would not yield to the management’s demands or dance to their tune? What was there to cover by the authorities? I remember that fateful evening when Mr. Jare was to speak before the waiting crowd at the Press Night at the mainbowl of the Trenchard Hall, but suddenly we heard a pronouncement that the Press Night be brought to an abrupt end. Whao! What a pre-determined occurrence? Any lesson for the G13 members of the Electoral Commission that voted for the disqualification of Mr. Adejare and who might have suffered one way or the other because the incumbent President was nowhere to be found when he was needed most? Any lessons for those crying over the fact that they would not be allowed to cook in their rooms, and other conditions being laid down, else a disciplinary action would follow. Who else can we blame for the recent state of the Union? Should we blame the past executive council members of the Union under the leadership of Tokunbo Salako? What role known or unknown could they have played in bringing the Union into comatose? What about the different campaigners of different camps? Did they foresee a Union in limbo? Different camps blamed the other for different reasons known to them, but all in a bid to win elections and emerge victorious. Today, can those who blamed or criticized Adejare for one reason or the other come out today to say: ‘’oh, truly we supported Edosa, and today we are proud of him.’’ Additionally, I remember the Mellanbites how they trooped out en masse to fight for their own Adejare. They protested. They blocked the gates. They published in the dailies the illegal, unconstitutional, and malicious disqualification of one of them. They petitioned. Their petition today cannot be found anywhere either as report or otherwise. They boycotted the election. They were later silenced through some political gimmicks unknown to them. Should they have fought on? Should they have gone to other quarters? Who would have listened to them? Would there had been a re-election? Would the Union have been strong under the leadership of Adejare? Would Adejare have been the best Union President ever? Would he have also disappointed the students? Were those facts about his past in Emmanuel Alayande College of Education used to disqualify him by the authorities of the University of Ibadan true or false? Moreover, should we blame the Chairman of the Electoral Commission then in person of Mr. Tijani Musa who was reported to have threatened a member of the Electoral Commission simply because he wanted to opt out of the Commission for the unconstitutional disqualification of Adejare, one from his constituency, as reported? Must we blame the then Dean of Students, Prof. Falaye, for the fact that up till now the report of the electoral petition tribunal of the Students’ Union is yet to be released? Or, has Adejare withdrawn the petition without the knowledge of the other students? Then, today, and tomorrow, students may cry over some unwholesome decisions as Union becomes crippled and dysfunctional. What are the roles being played by religious bodies in strengthening the Union, and rising to save the Union? Do they only pray without acting. I remember how the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria wrote in defence of Adejare then to the Vice Chancellor condemning the former’s disqualification. Or, could it be termed that the protest by MSSN was due to the fact that Adejare was one of them? If Edosa was affected, would the Christian body have risen to the occasion as well? Furthermore, what are the roles of other Unions in the University especially the ever-protesting ASUU- Academic Staff Union of Universities in strengthening the Students’ Union? It might be difficult for these Unions to act for one way or the other they are part of the management. Recent findings had shown that these Unions might have been asked to persuade the students into accepting the decisions by the management on cooking, use of kitchenette, resuscitation of cafeteria system, etc. Has the Union of Campus Journalists (UCJ) been living up to expectation? Do they report events on campus as they should? Do they inform and educate the University community as they ought? Are they armchair student-journalists? Am I to blame for the crippled Union? Are you to blame for the state of the Union? For there to be a just, better, virile, and egalitarian Union or society we all yearn for, it begins with you and myself regardless of our position or status- member of staff or student, as the University is a MICROCOSM of Nigeria. All hands must be on deck in addressing matters and proffering lasting solutions to issues not in a despotic manner as if a military or colonial administration
