Over 25 & Still Live at Home? Here Are 9 Struggles You Can Relate With

The whole idea of being an adult is that you are independent and you fend for yourself. Based on this idea, the general expectation is that by the adult age of 25 you have completed your education, gotten a job and moved out of your parent’s home. Unfortunately, the economy and a dreary labour market have created a boomerang effect, which now compels young adults to move back into their parents, or never even leave at all upon completing their education or finding a job.

Sure, it would seem that living with one’s parents would provide the perfect succor: a free room, free and regular home-cooked meal, the warmth and company of loved ones, and perhaps even free transportation; but those who actually live this reality would beg to differ.

UI suspends union activities, asks students to vacate campus

An emergency meeting of the Senate of the University of Ibadan was convened on Tuesday where it was decided that students’ union activities on the campus had been suspended until further notice.

Students of the institution were also asked to vacate their halls of residence before 6pm on Tuesday after they disobeyed the order to do so on Monday.

The decision followed the Monday closure of the school by the vice chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, after students staged a protest, blocking the busy Mokola-Ojoo road, thereby causing gridlock for several hours.

The students had given the school management an ultimatum to constitute a Students Welfare Board and set up a committee to look into the use of electric-powered cooking appliances in the school hostels and issuance of identity cards before their first semester examination. The examination was scheduled to have started in June but was postponed until July 17, 2017.

Melaye’s N50,000 ‘anti-corruption’ book not in bookstores — 12 days after launch

The book entitled, ‘Antidotes for Corruption’ was launched last Monday.

From Auchi to Lagos: My Lagos Story

I remember coming to Lagos for the first time. I had left Auchi not knowing what to expect when I got to my uncle’s house in Lagos. He had offered to take me in and take care of my schooling after my mum passed away. He was her only brother and she used to talk about him a lot.

I alighted at the bus park and I was almost dizzy from the frenzied activities that were going on around me. Hawkers shouting at the top of their voices promoting their wares. A woman was holding a conductor’s shirt and threatening to tear it if he didn’t give up her ‘change’. A conductor was hanging from a bus and screaming “Hold your change ooo. Ko si change ooo”. Another one was screaming “Oshodi Oke, Oshodi Oke”.

All of a sudden I saw three able bodied men with blood shot eyes, waylay one of the yellow buses. One climbed the back of the bus, the other one was arguing with the driver and broke off the front wiper when it seemed like the conversation wasn’t going the way he wanted it to. The third man was engaged in a fist fight with the conductor who had long jumped down from the bus. I was amazed at how the passengers in the bus sat down calmly and didn’t make any attempt to get down from the bus or intervene in the on-going scuffle.

You Do Not Have to Stay Friends With an Ex

What’s the angle when exes decide to bestie up?

Maturity has been trashed and misinterpreted in several ways, which I myself cannot comprehend. It’s kind of funny that when I decide that the best way to move out of a bad situation and regain my sanity, is always classified as immaturity.

One very unfortunate thing about feelings is that it is quite hard to kill it. Even the so-called maturity can never kill it. But you know what can try? Distance! And a lot of it.

When the reason for separation is on mutual grounds, it is okay to decide to stay friends. Maybe ‘hello’ and ‘how are you?’ But when it goes beyond that, it becomes a problem; you get stuck. You get hurt.

When it gets bad, you run.

Social media is so easy, but as humans we always choose to walk on the path of complication. Instead of rubbing the good life in each other’s faces, use the block button! If seeing stuff, gets your day cranked up, if it makes you feel bad and spend hours on a page with a rush of rage, use the block button!

Private jets and Africa’s habits of underdevelopment

Over the weekend, former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) gave out his daughter in marriage and the media could not seem to get over the spectacle of the number of private jets that landed in Minna, Niger State. The wedding was not the first instance of a crass exhibition of private jets by the Nigerian political class. In 2013, during the 50th celebration of Kenya’s independence, its Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohammed, mentioned that Nigeria wowed them with the array of private jets that brought former President Goodluck Jonathan and his associates to their country. Kenyans, unfortunately, should not have been dazzled. They should have been scornful of the country that cannot provide electricity but manages to fly its President and his attendants in a multitude of private jets.

Private jets, viewed against the backdrop of the grinding poverty and gross underdevelopment that plagues Africa, is obnoxious. Countries like the United States have more than half of all private jets in the world, but in their cultural context, their class ostentation makes far more sense than Africa where the majority live below poverty line. The sight of private jets in Africa is usually a testimony to the oppression of the masses by the rapacious ruling class and our habit of underdevelopment.

Instagram on copying Snapchat: “This is the way the tech industry works”

I think it would frankly be silly of us if we were to say “Oh see that good idea over there that’s actually fulfilling a need people have to share more moments of their life, oh because one person did that we can’t even go near that idea.”

That’s Instagram’s VP of Product Kevin Weil’s perspective about cloning Snapchat. He’s the man in charge of bringing Snap CEO Evan Spiegel’s vision to a much larger audience, reforging his features for the mainstream, and then taking Instagram a step further.

But rather than showing guilt, remorse, or reluctance about copying what’s worked for Snap, he sees it as a foregone conclusion — the inevitable march of progress where you either step in line or get left behind.

JAMB reschedules UTME in Ogbomoso

Candidates seeking to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, on Monday were disappointed as students of the school prevented them from gaining access to the two centres located within the university. Our correspondent learnt these were the only centres in Ogbomoso.

This is just as the Head, Public Affairs, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Mr. Fabian Benjamin, said that the candidates were likely to sit for the examination in Ilorin, Kwara State.

It was learnt that students of the institution had, as early as 7am, barricaded the gates of the university, vowing that the UTME would not hold until academic activities in the school resumed. The students also prevented teaching and non-teaching staff of the institution from entering the school

Efforts to speak to the school registrar, Jacob Agboola, was not successful but a member of staff of the school, who did not want his name in print because he is not authorised to speak on behalf of the management, said the authority of the school had a meeting with JAMB officials where an alternative was decided.

What’s Next After Winning Your First Customer?

Winning your first customer is like hitting the bull’s eye in the game of dart. It’s your breakthrough point; someone has found your product worthy of attention, and is willing to part with money in exchange for value.

To make this happen, ask these questions:

Do I have a ready market waiting to try out what I have to offer?
Who will that first client be?
Where can I find them?
Will my product(s) meet their needs?
What’s the right price?
A few years back, I took out time with my partner to visit a business district in Lagos where we could find names of companies we could send business proposals to. We explored each street and copied down names of big corporate organisations. We collated about thirty corporate names, prepared proposals and sent out to each and every one of them.

Mourinho accepts Europa final’s make-or-break billing

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho accepts the club’s season will be judged a failure if they do not beat Ajax in the Europa League final on May 24.

Mourinho says he has worked “harder than ever” during his maiden United campaign, which has already featured a League Cup triumph and victory over Leicester City in the Community Shield.

But with United needing to beat Ajax to secure a place in next season’s Champions League, he knows he will not be spared by the media if his side succumb to defeat at Stockholm’s Friends Arena.

“I think you, the media, have the right to say (that) and I think it makes sense to say,” he told reporters after United completed a 2-1 aggregate win over Celta Vigo in the semi-finals on Thursday.

UTME: Candidates, parents decry extra charges, centre allocation

Less than 48 hours to the commencement of the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, complaints of extortion, posting to distant centres and complications in printing e-slips have emerged.

Candidates who spoke with our correspondent on Thursday lamented the cancellation of their mock examination centres, payment of extra charges for corrections on their examination forms and difficulty in printing exam slips.

Illegality of Covenant University students’ suspension

The management of Covenant University, Ota, Ogun State has suspended about 200 undergraduates of the faith-based institution for missing an Easter ‘Youth Alive’ programme. The school had earlier organised a four-day Easter retreat for the students and had also made attendance mandatory. However, while some of the students were fed up – for various reasons – with going for church services in the morning and evening for the four uninterrupted days, they couldn’t but miss some days out of the retreat. Surprisingly and unfortunately for them, they have been punished through suspension by the school management. Some were suspended for a year.

Suspension is a very serious punishment. As serious as it is, however, there are instances where it will and must necessarily be applied on erring students. Yet, the means by which students are suspended from school must be reasonable and must be within the confines of our laws.

Make money while you sleep

Are you always agonising about not being able to pay your bills? Are you living from pay-check to pay-check? Are you shackled to a eight-to-five job that you detest but have no savings and no other source of income?

The salary you get from work is as a direct result of your efforts at work. Active income can be earned only by investing time and effort directly in return for money; if you don’t work, you don’t earn. Whether you are a teacher, a builder, a banker, an athlete or an actor, you have to work to earn a living. With passive income, it is the other way; your money is actually working for you with no extra effort on your part apart from the act of active investing.

She said she later discovered that the boys were students of Ireti Grammar School.

I walk towards them and as I make my way towards them, I see another group and this time they have cornered one of the girls who fell while running from them,” Matthew said.

All the Drama that Goes on at the Passport Office in Lagos

I was told I would need passport photographs, copies of my birth certificate and my certificate of origin to apply for an international passport. No one mentioned the N1,000 and N500 tips here and there.

I met a crowd under a canopy who came for the same purpose when I arrived the passport office in Ikeja. My contact gave me a form to fill and told me to join them. After waiting for more than three hours, I was told my file won’t be processed until I had a guarantor, a challenge that took me two weeks to fix.

When I returned two weeks later for what they call ‘capturing’, I met an even larger crowd triggered by the shortage of passport booklets. Among the crowd were returnees who were there to renew their passport. You know the usual IJGB signs – tattoos, bling-blings, jerry curl hair, weird haircuts, wanna ganna accent, singlets and shorts with winter boots etc.

The Ooni’s Palace has expressed sadness over the fire incident at the Oba of Lagos Rilwan Akiolu‘s palace.

Cristiano Ronaldo scores hat-trick as Real Madrid thrashed Atletico Madrid in Semi-Finals

Cristiano Ronaldo on Tuesday, became the first player in football history to score back-to-back hat-tricks in the Champions League knockout stages as Real Madrid thrashed Atletico Madrid to close in on a third final in four years.

Real were utterly dominant throughout against their city rivals at the Bernabeu and led after 10 minutes when Ronaldo headed home Casemiro‘s cross.

Ronaldo scored the second after smashing an unstoppable shot from 16 yards past Atletico keeper Jan Oblak, who had made several saves to keep his side in the tie.

And the Portugal captain ensured all the headlines would be his with a second consecutive Champions League hat-trick, having scored five goals in the quarter-final against Bayern Munich. It was his easiest goal of the night, as he controlled Lucas Vazquez‘s cross in plenty of space before firing home.

Atletico only had one shot on target and will need to pull off one of the Champions League’s all-time special performances to stop double-chasing Real from ending their European dreams for the fourth straight season.

The Omnipotence of Social Media

Social media has collected for itself, over time, a power that rivals any other. It has moved man to an epoch that we can properly tag the “age of hashtags”. It has redefined its own definitions and broken the bounds of its own boundaries. Social media has gone beyond social, it is now a market place, a political platform, a book-shop, a religious pulpit, an immoral cesspit: it has become, arguably, a little bit of everything, if not more. In this age, to live outside hashtags is not to trend, not to trend is to lack notability. To not be notable is, in extreme circumstances, not to exist, in cyberspaces at least – thank God!

It has become almost axiomatic in our own times to say that lives are lived on social media. Reputations have been made and lost on twitter, Facebook, Instagram. There, the cords of friendship and filial relationships have been made and bust too. This ‘break and make’ feature is due solely to the fact that social media has become un-dissociable from reality. Therefore, whatever one tweets or posts on social media platforms are used, always, as an indicator of reality – that is, of who one really is.
