T.B Joshua to be arraigned today over death of 116 persons

Pastor T.B Joshua along with some engineers will be arraigned today November 30th before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja over the death of 116 people in the Synagogue Church of all Nations building collapse which occurred in September 2014.

Joshua and his engineers are expected to be arraigned before Justice Lawal Akapo according to a statement by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, Bola Akingbade.

The engineers, Oladele Ogundeji and Akinbela Fatiregun, had last year filed a suit asking a court to stop the police from inviting, arresting or prosecuting them over the death of the 116 victims but a Coroner Inquest set up by the Lagos state government indicted the engineers and recommended them for investigation and prosecution for criminal negligence.

How to win the World's War

The  earth is a conquered territory. Man through the power of science has ensured that. The conquest has since shifted to the outer world where man’s fertile mind found newer challenges. There have been human forays into space and the planetary bodies. Flags have even been hoisted in Mars. But all of these feats peter into inanity as the contorting contradictions of life on earth threaten the shared thread of humanity. Forget the fiendish fictions of alien invasions flashed on 3-D screens by spell-binding scripts of Hollywood. There will be no such thing as a freaky flying saucer crash-landing into the sun and throwing the earth into an endless pall of darkness. None of those surreal contraptions will make the world come to an end. But something else will. Worse still, it is here with us.

Decongest Lagos To End Fuel Scarcity, IPMAN Tells FG

The Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has said the Federal Government should decongest Lagos by decentralising the distribution of petroleum products to coastal areas if it wants to curb fuel scarcity.

IPMAN National President, Chief Obasi Lawson, spoke at the weekend during a facility tour of tank farms in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Lawson, accompanied by other national and zonal officials, expressed surprise that in the State, it was only a tank farm, Master Energy that had products and sold at government-approved price of N77.66k.

He denied that IPMAN was responsible for hoarding, stressing that government should distribute the products to Port Harcourt, Calabar and Warri, to reduce the congestion in Lagos, which was the cause of scarcity.

INEC weighs its options on Kogi, Lawyers Disagree

  INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu
The death on Sunday of the All Progressive Congress (APC) candidate in the Kogi State governorship election, Alhaji Abubakar Audu, has thrown up issues that may require judicial interpretation of the courts on the legal status of a gubernatorial election in which a candidate dies before the declaration of results by the electoral commission.

While some lawyers, including Prof Itse Sagay and Mr. Olisa Agbakoba, both Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), said the death of a candidate before the declaration of results or emergence of a winner renders the election inconclusive and mandates the conduct of a fresh election, others held the opinion that the election would have to be concluded and the party that wins, even when the candidate is dead, would have to be declared the winner.

Of paramount consideration for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will be the glaring fact that this is the first time a candidate will die midstream into an election, after it has started and before it was concluded with the declaration of a winner and losers.
This dilemma was not envisaged by the framers of the constitution or the Electoral Act, 2010 (as amended). All the constitution provides for is a situation in which a declared winner dies or is unable to be sworn into office after the election while the Electoral Act provides for a situation where the candidate dies after his/her nomination, but before the election.

2 Things To Do Before You Ask For A Raise

It's the most wonderful time of the year — no, not the holidays — performance-review season at work! Now is when many employers evaluate their employees’ contributions to the organization’s mission and bottom line, and then make decisions about raises, bonuses, and promotions accordingly. So it’s a great time to ask for a raise.

But if you aren’t able to make a good case for yourself, then you might find that not only is your career becoming stagnant but also that you could be first on the chopping block in the event of corporate (or wider) economic misfortune. Assuming you don’t want to be considered disposable in the eyes of your employer, here are some tactics and strategies to implement before you ask for a raise. They might just help increase your chances of success.

1. Use your initial job interview to set the stage.
Remember how nobody cares about your money more than you do? Well, nobody cares about your career more than you do, either. In fact, in many ways your career and your money are arguably the same thing.

While there are (probably) supervisors out there who will proactively approach you with advancement opportunities appropriate for your skill set, it’s safer to assume that you’ll need to take matters into your own hands.

Intervene in Taraba Verdict, Group Urges NJC

A  non-governmental organisation, Taraba Mandate Group (TMG) has tasked the National Judicial Council (NJC) to wade into the Taraba State election petition tribunal which “arbitrarily” nullified the election of Governor Darius Ishaku of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The group at the weekend described the decision of the Election Petition Tribunal as a rape of democracy and a direct affront to the people of the state who voted for Ishaku.

The group in a statement signed by Gani Bako said: “As law abiding citizens of Nigeria, we are wondering why the National Judicial Council (NJC) has not found the courage to invite and prosecute the judges who almost truncated democracy at the Taraba governorship tribunal. The NJC has not deemed it fit to make a public pronouncement on the ongoing controversy.

Why Smart People Make More Stupid Mistakes

You’re clever. You’re a leader. And you’re probably making a lot of mistakes you’re not even aware of.
The brightest people and strongest leaders sometimes make errors others don’t. It’s a topic several LinkedIn Influencers weighed in on this week. Here’s what two of them had to say.
Travis Bradberry, president at TalentSmart
“It’s good to be smart. After all, intelligent people earn more money, accumulate more wealth, and even live longer,” wrote Bradberry in his post Why Smart People Act So Stupid. “But there’s another side to the story. Intelligent people have a reputation for making dumb mistakes, especially in situations that require common sense.”
There are several common ways in which smart people manage to shoot themselves in the foot.
Scientists might finally have an explanation for why this is the case. Intelligent people tend to blurt out answers with confidence, explained Bradberry. The research explained why “rational thinking and intelligence don’t tend to go hand in hand”.

The concerned officials and agencies advised the Senate President to rather  direct his energy towards defending the charge against him and not impute political motive to his ordeal.

As Buhari's Ship Sets Sail

After about six months of delay, Nigeria’s ship of state under the captainship of President Muhammadu Buhari has finally set sail. On May 29 this year, the president was inaugurated into office following a pan-Nigeria mandate he secured from a slim victory over his predecessor and then incumbent, Goodluck Jonathan. A tumultuous euphoria greeted his victory and subsequent assumption of office. So also was a massive burden of expectations from a citizenry harangued by decades of inept leadership. Nigerians looked to the coming of Buhari as the soothing balm to cure the aches and bruises of a dysfunctional society steeped in a paradox of wasted wealth. They expect him to rescue the country that has become characterised by a crumbling economy, widespread poverty, decaying public infrastructure, sunken social services, and a debased sense of self-worth abroad.

What Empowers ISIS

Whether or not ISIS brought down Metrojet Flight 9268 in the Sinai Peninsula, the terrorist group has catapulted itself from obscurity to lead the global jihadist movement in just 18 months.

ISIS controls territory in Syria and Iraq that by some estimates is the size of the United Kingdom, and it lords over millions of people in both countries.

The group has also secured pledges of allegiance from two dozen militant organizations from around the Muslim world, including in the Sinai and Egypt's neighbor Libya, while around 10 other groups have declared some form of solidarity with ISIS.

The key to ISIS' success is not the group's military strength -- ISIS in Syria and Iraq may number only about 20,000 to 30,000 fighters -- but the weaknesses of the regimes where the group is doing well.

Think of the Sunni militant group ISIS as a pathogen that preys on weak hosts in the Muslim world.

What it really takes to be the boss

Many of us aspire to big roles at work — we want to be the boss. Of course, once we get there, it’s not always as glamourous, or as easy, as we had imagined it would be. That’s especially true for entrepreneurs.
The secret to excelling at being in charge are subtle, but important. It’s a topic several LinkedIn Influencers weighed in on this week.
There are two types of bosses: managers and leaders
Here’s what two of them had to say about what it takes to be an entrepreneur and the head honcho.
Richard Branson, founder at Virgin Group
“I’m often asked, ‘What does it take to be the boss?’ It’s a hard question to answer,” wrote Branson in his post What Does it Take to Be the Boss? Managers Versus Leaders. “In my opinion, there are two types of bosses: managers and leaders.”
