The preliminary round of the 2016 CAF Champions League has produced very few surprises as the vast majority of the favourites went through to the next round.
Defeated 1-0 by Vipers SC in Uganda in the first leg, ACL regulars Enyimba turned the table around on Sunday with a 2-0 home win to progress to the last-32 of Africa’s foremost club competition, while South African representative Kaizer Chiefs, who were taking a comfortable four-goal advantage into their home tie with Volcan Club, extended their continental journey without kicking a ball after the Comoros side failed to pitch up.
Angola’s Recreativo do Liolo completed their demolition of Racing de Micomeseng of Equatorial Guinea, running away with a 9-1 aggregate victory, and Guinea’s Horoya AC and Congo’s Etoile enjoyed convincing home wins over AS Douanes Dakar and AS Mangasport respectively after securing an away goalless draw in the first leg.
Continental giants AS Vita Club, Stade Malien and ASEC Mimosas also ended up on the winning side against Mafunzo FC, RC Bobo Dioulasso and AS Coton Tchad respectively.
However, Ghana champions Ashanti Gold crashed out of the tournament after falling 2-3 to Algeria’s MO Béjaïa on aggregate.
