Dah-dah-dah-duh-duh-DAH! Of course, you’ll have recognised the Super Mario music there, which we’re playing in celebration of the news that everyone’s favourite plumber is getting a brand new movie. And happily, this version is going to be a fully animated affair…
If you were a child of the ‘80s, chances are you’ll remember the 1993 live-action movie that starred Bob Hoskins as a weirdly cockney-sounding Mario. Quite frankly, it was terrible. However, Nintendo has seemingly learned its lesson, with the videogame giant set to team up with Illumination Entertainment, the studio behind the Despicable Me franchise.
Mario is getting his own animated movie, from the people who brought you Minions / Nintendo / MTV
Nintendo big dog Shigeru Miyamoto will be on co-producer duties, so hopefully the new film will be much closer in tone to the videogame series.
The project is in its very early stages at present, so don’t expect to see this one in cinemas for a few years yet. Could it be the videogame movie that finally breaks Hollywood’s “videogame movies are bad” curse? Fingers crossed…
