Another trend that afflicted classrooms this year graced Google's top ten searchable phrases: "How to make a fidget spinner" was ranked as the seventh-most Googled "how to" phrase.

For the year, the most popular movies searched on Google were IT, Wonder Woman, Beauty and the Beast, Logan, and Justice League. At number five was "how to watch Mayweather vs McGregor", one of the most anticipated fights of the year, which almost 3 million people viewed illegally.

Another one was Matt Lauer, after he was sacked by NBC amid sexual harassment allegations.

The story and the present day of the cryptocurrencies takes the second place, followed by the massive mass shooting in Las Vegas, the North Korean crisis and the solar eclipse.

Singer Tom Petty led the "Losses" category.

Another big search that also put Houston front and center was the Super Bowl, where the New England Patriots beat the Atlanta Falcons in overtime back in February.

Among the most wanted people in Google is also the American actress Megan Marcel, the bride of Britain's Prince Harry. Calorie-counting users turned to Google in droves to find out more about Starbucks' Unicorn Frappucino.
