The House of Representatives has given the assurance that it would review and update all of the nation’s  laws which have become obsolete within the next two years to make them applicable to contemporary challenges.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, said this when he received members of the Save Democracy Group Africa, led by former speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon Ghali Na’Abba.

He also warned that poverty on the African continent is threatening the survival of democracy.

Dogara disclosed that the lover chambers has already began a compilation and comprehensive review of the outdated laws.

"Democracy is only as deep as the laws are. If your laws are shallow, your democracy will be shallow. I assure you that in the next 2 years, the 8th Assembly of the National Assembly would have cleaned all our laws and statues, that is our resolve,” he said.

The Speaker said poverty and its attendant consequence of insecurity are a threat to democracy on the African continent, and called on governments to tackle the scourges of under-development, unemployment and under-employment.

“Democracy is facing a serious threat in Africa is because of poverty. The poor man does not engage in democracy, he does not have the tools and so is excluded from the joys of democracy,” he added.

He therefore called for deliberate efforts to be directed at ensuring the survival of democracy.
Na’Abba, speaking earlier, disclosed that  the pro-democracy group intends to host an annual national political summit premised on the success of the last general elections to enhance dialogue. He also called for institutionalisation of the summit to provide knowledge on the state of the polity and the strength of democracy.

In another development, the House Committee on Navy has pledged to extend all the necessary support for the Nigerian Navy in its fight as it struggles to contain unprecedented crude oil theft and criminality in the maritime sector.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the committee in Abuja, the Chairman, Hon. Abdulsamad Dasuki (Sokoto APC) said the committee would come up with a workable plan to achieve greater success, for the Nigerian Navy.

"Our duty is to support the Nigerian Navy in its fight against economic sabotage, and the maintenance of our territorial integrity, security of lives and properties," he said.

The continued drive to maintain a highly professional naval force cannot be over-emphasised, Dasuki said, adding that the committee's duty is to support the Navy in its fight against economic sabotage.
