Why Akon is hosting AFRIMA 2017 –Mike Dada

For Mike Dada, President/Executive Producer, All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), the award ceremony is a way to communicate Africa and change the way people perceive the continent.

Scheduled to hold on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos, AFRIMA will be hosted by Grammy award winning superstar, Akon. In this interview, Dada reveals the excitements and challenges of organising the awards and why he has decided to bring the Senegal-born music star to Nigeria.

What are the objectives of AFRIMA?

The major objective is to create a platform where we can communicate the strength of Africa to the rest of the world, for global competitiveness through culture, arts and entertainment. The idea is to create jobs and make people proud to be Africans. We want to tell the world that something good and great can come out of Africa. We want the world to know that Africa should not be only known for poverty, diseases, wars, homelessness and joblessness.

What’s the theme for this year’s AFRIMA?

The general theme for AFRIMA is ‘For Hope, For Celebration’. But this year, for various events, we have different themes. For instance, we have as themes ‘The Digital Take Over’, ‘Shaping the Future of African Music’ with the sub-theme ‘Music Money Media’. And for the award ceremony, we are focusing on the youth.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Reigns Supreme with Massive $121 Million Opening

Nothing makes money like Disney. As Beauty and the Beast continues to reign supreme at the 2017 domestic box office, Thor: Ragnarok now has the fourth biggest domestic opening of 2017 with a whopping $121 million, outpacing most estimates by a solid $5 million or so. That places it right below Andy Muschietti‘s It, which brought in some $123 million in its opening weekend, on the list of 2017 opening and sticks Taika Waititi‘s film right between Spider-Man: Homecoming ($117 million) and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 ($146 million) on the Marvel 2017 opening charts.

It feels genuinely unfair to compare the rest of the top five to this kind of predictable blow-out. A Bad Moms Christmas, the only other new release that played wide this weekend, came in at second with a total of $21 million after debuting on Wednesday. That still leaves a gap of some $99.4 million between the amiable, forgettable sequel and Ragnarok, one of the best movies that the MCU has produced thus far. In its second frame, Jigsaw came in at third with $6.7, up against Tyler Perry‘s Boo 2! at fourth with $4.6 million and Geostorm at fifth with $3 million. Combined, those three films made two-thirds of what A Bad Moms Christmas made.

Justin Bieber Reportedly Thrilled That Selena Gomez Is Single Cause He Wants to Be Her Boyfriend Again

It may be true that Selena Gomez and The Weeknd’s very recent breakup had nothing to do with Justin Bieber. It may also be true that this is Justin Bieber’s opportunity to present himself as a new man. And not just cause it’s Halloween and he’s a man.

In a juicy and slightly believable scoop, People published testimony from an anonymous source close to Bieber on Tuesday claiming that the pop star is “happy Selena is single. He hopes to regain her trust so they can get back together.” Oh shit, someone warn Selena Gomez!

The source-slash-wingman added, “It seems their relationship now is very different. Justin is certainly a much better person. He would be a better boyfriend, too.” Is he a better person? Really? Or is he a person who only last week got a bad entire-torso tattoo.

Alter Ego : “The Lawyer with a Split Personality”

Alter Ego has made a lot of rounds in the cinema especially because it saw the comeback of one of Nollywood’s finest Omotola Jolade Ekehinde. Not just was she on our screens again, she played a totally different Omotola from the sweet, conservative one we were all used to.  Her fans as well as movie critics were glad to have her back. In fact it’s safe to say, her presence in the movie drove the traffic.

Produced by Moses Inyang, Alter Ego saw Ada Igwe (Omotola) as a famous lawyer who owned her own law firm, she was specialized in fighting for your girls and women who were victims of rape and sexual harassment and had no money to pay for the services of a lawyer. Ada would take up their case and would stop at nothing till they got their expected victory. She was driven by a special zeal and motivation which no one could really understand as it wasn’t about the money but the selflessness and hope she gave to the girls. Of course, until we found out why she actually really hated men.

Thanks to previous sexual abuses, all she wanted was to sleep around and never have anything serious to do with these opposite gender, until a successful, hardworking, charming man, Wole, came her way. As you know all that glitters isn’t gold and he gave Ada sleepless nights and a run for her career.

“10 Days in Sun City”, Akpos’ South African Adventure

Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY played major roles in his new block buster movie “10 days in Sun City“. He played the role of the producer as well as the lead character in this new movie. Over the years AY has produced very hilarious Nigerian movies ranging from 10 days in Atlanta, a trip to Jamaica and now this 2017 hit.
The obvious facts for most of his movies have being the calibre of cast and crew, the story line and script, the words and slang used all through and a particular “Warri Slang” that later becomes the slogan or key highlight of the movie. For this edition two outstanding slang in the movie was an insult which was formerly known as “your father” but now referred to as “Your real Dad” and the one he used to refer to Agbani Darego which he explained meant that “Agbani don reign go”.
The most important thing for me when I watch a movie is the story line and the lessons learnt. What exactly can be taken from the movie. Despite it being funny and hilarious to majority of the people in the cinema that night, most of us didn’t quite get the story-line or take home any lesson.
Well apart from AY, our amiable and adorable Adesuwa Etomi and handsome Richard Mofe Damijo who played key roles in making this movie.

“I think every single mother you see made a wrong choice” – Lola Alao

Actress Lola Alao, popular for her role in Yoruba movies, recently had a chat with Vanguard in which she talked about her life as a producer, as a single mother and as an actress.

See excerpts below.

On taking a break from Nollywood: I have been doing other things because the industry is very poor right now. When I say poor, I mean when you produce a movie, the marketers do not make profit because of piracy. Also, people don’t buy our movies like before; they would rather watch cable TV, so I decided to slow down a little. I produced a movie last year but it is yet to be released, the movie was shot in California, Las Vegas, Paris and Nigeria.

On the challenges of being a producer: Piracy is killing this industry. I have also noticed that anybody can decide to become a producer which is wrong. Like I said earlier, I just produced a movie, I didn’t produce it with my money; I took a bank loan which I have to pay back, but with the rate of piracy in the industry that might be a challenge.

XPloreNollywood: 7 Reasons Why You Should See Wonder Woman

Without sounding too corny or coming off as feminist, I was truly looking forward to Wonder Woman – the superhero film based on the DC Comics character of the same name and distributed by Warner Bros. At this stage, not sure who is winning the war between DC Comics (Warner Bros) or Marvel (Walt Disney), but between them, there has been a testosterone filled surge of male super heroes that unfortunately had women as backup and never in the lead.

There has technically been no superhero movie with a woman in the lead; yes there was Elektra, Black Widow and a host of others, but women were not in the lead.

Set in 1918, the film tells the story of Princess Diana, who grows up on the Amazon island of Themyscira. After American pilot, Steve Trevor crashes, offshore of the island and is rescued by Diana, he tells her about the ongoing World War. She then leaves her home to end the conflict, becoming Wonder Woman in the process.

Five social media mistakes that can cost you a job

Your social media posts may win over friends and get you few hundred or thousand likes, shares or retweets, however they can also cost you a job. Here are five social media mistakes most likely to cost you a job:

You complain about work
When hiring managers sometimes browse through social media profiles of candidates, imagine what their impression of you will be when they see job complaint posts on your wall. They are very likely going to be turned off and conclude that you are a potential danger to their brand (mainly because there is nothing to stop you from bad-mouthing their firm too). The question then will be, ‘Will I want to hire a person that can be a potential danger to the brand of my firm?’ and the answer to that question is quite clear.
