A Calgary-based, humanitarian organization says an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus is spreading rapidly in West Africa.

Samaritan's Purse sent a team to the front lines in an effort to contain the highly-contagious virus.
Keren Massey, who's originally from Three Hills, is one of four Canadians working with the Liberian government. Continue.

She says the Ebola virus is easily spread and that nine times out of 10 people who get the disease will die.
That has prompted victims to flee the cities, says Massey.

“This fear is prompting people to run away from medical care. So, once they develop the symptoms instead of going to the hospital and identifying themselves, they cross borders to New Guinea, which makes it extremely difficult to follow up on them,” she said.

“It means the virus is spreading across the country.”
Massey has started an awareness campaign that she hopes will educate more than 200,000 about how to protect themselves.
