  The Lagos State Chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Tuesday called for understanding of Lagosians on the removal of the Presiding Chaplain of Chapel of Christ the Light Church, Lagos.

The Chairman of CAN, Lagos State Chapter, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola, briefed newsmen at the church on the sack of Venerable Femi Taiwo, who was removed on May 15 by the governing council of the church.

Taiwo was sacked one day after Governor Ambode‘s wife Bolanle allegedly left the church angrily during an announcing service.

UI suspends union activities, asks students to vacate campus

  An emergency meeting of the Senate of the University of Ibadan was convened on Tuesday where it was decided that students’ union activities on the campus had been suspended until further notice.

Students of the institution were also asked to vacate their halls of residence before 6pm on Tuesday after they disobeyed the order to do so on Monday.

The decision followed the Monday closure of the school by the vice chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, after students staged a protest, blocking the busy Mokola-Ojoo road, thereby causing gridlock for several hours.

The students had given the school management an ultimatum to constitute a Students Welfare Board and set up a committee to look into the use of electric-powered cooking appliances in the school hostels and issuance of identity cards before their first semester examination. The examination was scheduled to have started in June but was postponed until July 17, 2017.

DG: New National Minimum Wage will Determine Increase in NYSC Members’ Allowance

  The Director General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier Sulaiman Zakari Kazaure, has said that an increase in the allowance of youth corps members in the country will be determined by the introduction of a new national minimum wage for workers.
“The NYSC allowance is determined by the national minimum wage. We are waiting on the government to take a decision on the new wage structure before we know what to do,” he said.

Melaye’s N50,000 ‘anti-corruption’ book not in bookstores — 12 days after launch

                         
Twelve days after Dino Melaye, a senator representing Kogi west, launched his “anti-corruption” book, it is still not in bookstores.

The book entitled, ‘Antidotes for Corruption’ was launched last Monday.

At the launch, it was announced that the book of which price is N50,000 would be available in Abuja bookstores that week.

But 12 days after, the book has not hit bookstores in the federal capital territory (FCT).

TheCable called the telephone of Melaye to inquire about the reason for the delay in the release of the book in bookstores, but there was no response. An SMS sent to him as well was not responded to.

  I remember coming to Lagos for the first time. I had left Auchi not knowing what to expect when I got to my uncle’s house in Lagos. He had offered to take me in and take care of my schooling after my mum passed away. He was her only brother and she used to talk about him a lot.

I alighted at the bus park and I was almost dizzy from the frenzied activities that were going on around me. Hawkers shouting at the top of their voices promoting their wares. A woman was holding a conductor’s shirt and threatening to tear it if he didn’t give up her ‘change’. A conductor was hanging from a bus and screaming “Hold your change ooo. Ko si change ooo”. Another one was screaming “Oshodi Oke, Oshodi Oke”.

All of a sudden I saw three able bodied men with blood shot eyes, waylay one of the yellow buses. One climbed the back of the bus, the other one was arguing with the driver and broke off the front wiper when it seemed like the conversation wasn’t going the way he wanted it to. The third man was engaged in a fist fight with the conductor who had long jumped down from the bus. I was amazed at how the passengers in the bus sat down calmly and didn’t make any attempt to get down from the bus or intervene in the on-going scuffle.

Nigerian Writer Jowhor Ile Emerges Winner of 2016 Etisalat Prize for Literature

  Nigerian writer, Jowhor Ile has been announced the winner of the 2016 Etisalat Prize for Literature at the Grand Finale in Lagos, which took place almost two months behind schedule.

His book ‘And after many days’ was the pick of the panel of judges, over Jacqui L’Ange (South Africa) The Seed Thief and another Nigerian Juliet Iromuanya’s Mr and Mrs Doctor.

Ile’s book was published in Nigeria by Kachifo Limited.

As the winner, Ile will receive £15,000, an engraved Montblanc Meisterstück pen, an Etisalat sponsored book tour to three African countries. He will also have an Etisalat-sponsored fellowship at the University of East Anglia, mentored by Professor Giles Foden, author of The Last King of Scotland.

FUTA reinstates suspended VC, appoints new one

  The Governing Council of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, has reinstated the suspended Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Adebiyi Daramola.

The council had also appointed Prof. Joseph Adeola Fuwape as the seventh substantive VC of the university.

In a statement issued by the Head, Media and Protocol of the university, Mr. Adegbenro Adebanjo, the Council, presided over by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Senator Joseph Waku, ratified Fuwape’s appointment at its special meeting held on Thursday, May 18, 2017.

Adebanjo said the letter of appointment was personally signed by Senator Waku and Prof. Fuwape’s appointment takes effect from Wednesday, May 24, 2017, adding that it would be for a single term of five years.

Private jets and Africa’s habits of underdevelopment

  Over the weekend, former military dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.) gave out his daughter in marriage and the media could not seem to get over the spectacle of the number of private jets that landed in Minna, Niger State. The wedding was not the first instance of a crass exhibition of private jets by the Nigerian political class. In 2013, during the 50th celebration of Kenya’s independence, its Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohammed, mentioned that Nigeria wowed them with the array of private jets that brought former President Goodluck Jonathan and his associates to their country. Kenyans, unfortunately, should not have been dazzled. They should have been scornful of the country that cannot provide electricity but manages to fly its President and his attendants in a multitude of private jets.

Private jets, viewed against the backdrop of the grinding poverty and gross underdevelopment that plagues Africa, is obnoxious. Countries like the United States have more than half of all private jets in the world, but in their cultural context, their class ostentation makes far more sense than Africa where the majority live below poverty line. The sight of private jets in Africa is usually a testimony to the oppression of the masses by the rapacious ruling class and our habit of underdevelopment.

JAMB releases UTME results

  The first set of the ongoing Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination has been released.

This is just as the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board asked candidates in Ogbomoso to print notifications of their new examination centres from their email addresses.

The Head, Public Affairs, JAMB, Mr. Fabian Benjamin, in a statement on Tuesday said that the results of 742, 906 candidates who sat for the examination on Saturday and Monday was released within 24 hours.

“Candidates are to check their email addresses or visit the board’s website for the results. A total of 742, 906 candidates sat for the examination on Saturday and Monday. Another 401,292 candidates are expected to join them today, raising the number to 1, 144, 198 out of 1, 718,425.”

According to Benjamin, the candidates, who have been posted to nearby towns such as Saki, Ago-Amodu and Ibadan are to sit for the examination between Thursday and Saturday at the new locations.

JAMB reschedules UTME in Ogbomoso

  Candidates seeking to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation at the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, on Monday were disappointed as students of the school prevented them from gaining access to the two centres located within the university. Our correspondent learnt these were the only centres in Ogbomoso.

This is just as the Head, Public Affairs, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Mr. Fabian Benjamin, said that the candidates were likely to sit for the examination in Ilorin, Kwara State.

It was learnt that students of the institution had, as early as 7am, barricaded the gates of the university, vowing that the UTME would not hold until academic activities in the school resumed. The students also prevented teaching and non-teaching staff of the institution from entering the school

Efforts to speak to the school registrar, Jacob Agboola, was not successful but a member of staff of the school, who did not want his name in print because he is not authorised to speak on behalf of the management, said the authority of the school had a meeting with JAMB officials where an alternative was decided.

Adeleke: Osun deputy governor appears before coroner

  Osun State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Titi Laoye-Tomori, is giving evidence before the coroner ordered by Governor Rauf Aregbesola to probe the death of Senator Isiaka Adeleke.

The deputy governor, who entered the courtroom at around 10:35, said she waived her immunity to appear personally before the coroner because of the importance of the probe.

The deputy governor and the late Adeleke were together at the burial ceremony of the grandmother of the APC Senatorial Chairman in Osun West Senatorial District, Mr. Amobi Akintola.
