NLC Threatens To Shut Down NIPOST Offices Nationwide

The president of The  Nigeria Labour Congress Mr. Ayuba Wabba and the employees of The National Union of Post and Telecommunication on Wednesday shut down the operations of the Nigerian Postal Services in Abuja to protest an alleged decision of the management (of NIPOST) to compel Level 07 members of staff, numbering over 4,000, to join the Senior Staff Association of Communications, Transport and Corporations, against their wish

Wabba said that the NIPOST management wrote the Accountant General’s Office to send check-off dues deducted from Level 07 officials of the organisation who have been in NUPTE for over 30 years to the SSACTAC.
He said the NIPOST management violated the rights of workers to belong to unions of their choice.
The NLC President also denied a claim by SSACTAC that the matter was before the court and that a prevailing court order had been issued to restrain the NLC from further action.

He said: “Section 40 of our Constitution says there is freedom of association. These workers have been members of NUPTE for over 30 years. Overnight, the management transferred them to SSACTAC. Is that law? Freedom of association means workers should decide which union they want to belong; it is not at the whim and caprices of the management.
“The management wrote a letter to the Office of the Accountant General, ceding those members to SSACTAC. They have belonged to NUPTE for over 30 years. These are of our grievances.
“ILO Convention says the workers have a right to the freedom of association. They belong to a union; you must seek their consent. The workers here are protesting because they have ceded them to another union so as to undermine their interest.
“Well, we have not been served. I have not seen any court injunction. That is why we are here. We are respecters of the law. Once we are served and put on notice, we would abide by the law. Nobody told us about any court order.
“Over 4,000 workers were ceded to another union. They belong to NUPTE before now. That is the reason for this picketing.”
The President of SSACTAC told journalists that the affected NUPTE members were members of SSACTAC who were on loan to NUPTE to beef up its finances.

Egyptian Court Sentences Ousted President Morsi To Death

CAIRO — An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced to death the deposed president, Mohamed Morsi of the Muslim Brotherhood, along with more than 100 others, for fleeing prison during the 2011 revolt against President Hosni Mubarak.

Mr. Morsi’s conviction is the latest sign of the undoing of the uprising that overthrew Mr. Mubarak. Mr. Morsi, who was Egypt’s first freely elected leader, now faces the death penalty for escaping extralegal detention — a form of detention that many Egyptians hoped would be eliminated by the revolution.

If carried out, the sentence could make Mr. Morsi a martyr to millions of Islamists in Egypt and around the world. In a statement about the sentencing, Amr Darrag, a Muslim Brotherhood leader who was a cabinet minister under Mr. Morsi, said it was “one of the darkest days of Egyptian history” and a symbol “of the dark shadow of authoritarianism that is now cast back over Egypt.”

Judge Shaaban el-Shami issued the ruling in a courtroom in a converted auditorium on the grounds of a police academy on the outskirts of Cairo. Mr. Morsi, wearing a blue prison uniform, stood inside a metal and glass cage built in the courtroom. Some of his co-defendants, including other senior Brotherhood leaders, also appeared in the cage.

Galaxy of Stars As Africa Magic Celebrates Igbo Channel

Finally, the African Magic Igbo Channel was launched and for some weeks now, it has been running on Africa Magic, the continent's leading provider of world class African entertainment. But a recent gathering, which hosted a galaxy of movie stars in Enugu State, was merely to celebrate the new channel and all that it portends. Writes Mary Ekah.  "The industry has embraced it, the viewers obviously love it. It is another channel that tells a different side of the Nigeria story and helps, outsiders see Nigeria and Africa as a whole, from another point of view.  It is not just about Nigeria but it is about Africa. So we have audiences all across Africa that are actually keen to this channel. So we are really excited.” Those were the exact words of the visibly excited Regional Director of M-Net (West), Mrs. Wangi Mba-Uzoukwu, at the recent event to celebrate the birth of the Africa Magic Igbo Channel held in Enugu. The launch could not have come at a better time and so the turn out was huge as a handful of Igbo sons and daughters in and outside the movie industry, mostly dressed in their native attires, turned out in a large number to witness the landmark event. The event was the celebration of the Igbo culture and the role Igbo language movies played in founding the Nigerian film and television industry, which has grown to become the second biggest movie industry in the world. M-Net, owners of the Africa Magic channels, has therefore availed Africans with platforms to tell their stories from their own perspective.  The star studded event featured elegant performances by an Igbo traditional troupe and stellar performances from artistes including Chidinma, Phyno, and Flavour, who closed the event with a medley of his hit songs. A highlight of the evening was when the elegant stallion, Onyeka Onwenu, joined Chidinma on stage in a spontaneous, unforgettable performance.  Hosted by ace comedian and Nollywood actor, Okey Bakassi, the glamorous event, which held at The Dome, had in attendance leading players from the Nigerian film and television industry including many who were instrumental to the industry's founding with early Igbo language content. Veteran entertainers like Chief Peter Edochie, Onyeka Owenu, Bob-Manuel Udokwu, Eucharia Anunobi, Kenneth Okonkwo, Clem Ohameze and Francis Duru were present at the event, which featured colourful displays of the Igbo culture.

3 Things You Need For Recognizing Opportunities

Moyo Mamora

It’s often said that success happens when opportunity meets preparation. The beauty of life is that we all have access to opportunities. However, only a few people have trained themselves to recognize these opportunities, and more importantly take advantage of them. An opportunity is defined as either a favorable or advantageous circumstance or combination of circumstances, or a chance for progress or advancement.

No matter where you may be in life currently, there’s always more…something better…and greater. Don’t let the memories of the past impede on the dreams of tomorrow. Past failures or success is never an indication of what opportunities are available for you going forward.

The next phase of progress in our lives many times is routed through the door of opportunity. Hence, it is imperative that at every point in life we ask “what’s next?” and “How do I get there?” The answer to these questions is in preparation!

What does it take to take advantage of opportunities?

Decision
It all starts with a decision! I realized that life got much better for me the moment I began to take decisions and own them. When you make a firm decision and follow through on it, it is empowering. You recognize that you are responsible for your life and with that if you don’t like the way things are you can make a change. The feeling of being able to influence one’s circumstances is one of the highest cognitive states.

Zig Ziglar said, “As a young aspiring speaker I heard a motivation speaker say ‘You are where you are because that’s exactly where you chose to be.’ I was broke, in debt, and down in the dumps. It came through loud and clear that I was where I was and what I was because of the choices and decisions I made!”

Doing nothing or making exhaustive complaints about your current situation is a decision in itself. Your decisions, not your circumstances, determine your destiny. Make a decision to prepare for the next phase of your life and to take full advantage of God given opportunities.

Recognize that there are certain aspects of your life that you have the power to change, and make a decision to do what it takes to make those changes. You become happier and fulfilled to the degree you feel in control of your life, but it all starts with a decision!

Perspective
Do you see the glass half full or half empty? Both pessimism and optimism have their advantages, but I’d rather be an optimist. For you to make the best of opportunities and succeed, you must have an expectation of a better future. You attract what you expect and what you hold in your mind; with an optimistic perspective on life, you are conditioned to see the positive in situations. As a result, when others are blinded to possible opportunities, you will recognize them.

How Britain's Election Has Stumped the Betting Markets

British voters are heading to the polls Thursday, and it looks as if it’s going to be a nail-biter. Political prediction markets suggest that it’s basically a 50-50 bet as to whether the Conservative prime minister, David Cameron, will serve another term or be ousted by Labour’s leader, Ed Miliband. I can recall very few elections where the bookies couldn’t pick a favorite by election eve.

The traditional two-party system is breaking down in Britain, which makes the outcome more uncertain because it renders traditional approaches to predicting the outcome less useful. Multiparty elections bring a type of complexity that traditional polling — and computer models based on polling — are ill-equipped to deal with.

US Govt Considers Michelle Obama, Biden, Kerry For Buhari's Inauguration

Following thesuccessful conduct of the 2015 polls, there are indications that the United States Government will send a large, high-powered delegation, which may be led by either US First Lady Michelle Obama, Vice-President Joe Biden or Secretary of State, John Kerry, to the inauguration of Major-General Muhammadu Buhari on May 29 as Nigeria’s fifth democratically elected president.

Confirming this on Wednesday, a source in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs told THISDAY that it was very likely that the delegation might be led by either Mrs. Obama, the US vice-president or Kerry.

He said the ministry was aware that Nigeria’s Ambassador to the US, Prof. Ade Adefuye was scheduled to have a meeting with the US State Department at 2 pm (EST) on Monday where the issue of the delegation will be discussed and finalised.

Since Buhari’s victory at the polls and the peaceful transition in the country following President Goodluck Jonathan’s concession of defeat, several countries have shown a renewed interest in Nigeria and have moved to improve ties with the incoming administration.
Relations between Nigeria and the US, in recent months, have been frosty following the latter’s reluctance to provide concrete assistance in the war against the Boko Haram insurgency.

Things got to a head last year when the US blocked Nigeria’s attempt to procure American-manufactured Cobra helicopters from Israel for the war against Boko Haram.

2015 Budget: FG Borrows N473bn in Four Months

The Federal Government on Tuesday said it had within the past four months, borrowed the sum of N473bn to finance the 2015 budget.

The Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, stated this during a media briefing on the 2015 budget, which was passed last week by the National Assembly.

The Senate had last week Tuesday passed the national budget of N4.493tn for the 2015 fiscal year, about five months after it was presented by Okonjo-Iweala.

The fiscal document, which was earlier passed by the House of Representatives two weeks ago, was N51bn higher than the N4.425tn submitted to both chambers of the National Assembly by the Federal Government.

But the minister said despite the fact that the budget had not been signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan, the constitution allows the executive to incur expenditure within the first six months into the fiscal year.

She, however, said the drop in oil revenue, which began in 2014 and lasted up to the first quarter of this year, had impacted negatively on the gross federally collectible revenue.

For instance, she said the country experienced a 50 per cent cut in revenue owing to the slump in oil prices, coupled with low revenue receipts from non-oil sources as most companies had yet to file in their tax returns within the first quarter of this year.

This, according to her, had made the government to resort to borrowing the sum of N473bn out of the N882bn provided for borrowing in the 2015 budget.

The minister said in as much as the Federal Government had, in the past, tried to reduce the level of borrowing, such could not be achieved this year owing to cash flow problems.

For instance, she said government borrowing was brought down to about N570bn last year, noting that the figure had to go up to about N882bn in order to cushion the negative impact of revenue decline.

According to her, about N380bn of the N882bn is for external borrowing while the balance of N502bn is for domestic borrowing.

She said, “We have tried to work within the budget. The budget provides for N882bn in borrowing and we have had to increase the borrowing budget this year as compared to last year when we have actually brought it down.

“If you all recall, we said we will be bringing down borrowing to finance the budget and we have been doing that steadily.

“Last year, the borrowing came down to about N570bn but this year, because of the very difficult cashflow situation, we ve provided N882bn in borrowing.

“About N380bn of that is external borrowing and the balance of N502bn for domestic borrowing. So what we ve had to do to manage this first half is to front load the borrowing program which is a normal reaction that you have because the cash crunch has been very difficult.

“In the budget, we provided for N882bn and all we have borrowed is within the budget. What we have borrowed so far is N473bn and so we still have more room for borrowing.”

How To Get A Small Business Loan From A Bank

Let’s talk about getting a small business loan from a bank. One of the challenges of running and expanding a small business in Nigeria is getting access to funds to finance the business. People usually start their businesses with money they have saved and, sometimes, donations or loans from friends and family. Sometimes, money from these sources is not enough to really grow a business, and so the business owner starts looking for other ways to finance his ventures.

Some business owners say that banks are not willing to lend money to small businesses. This is not the case. The issue, many times, is that business owners do not know how to organize and present their businesses in a way that will help them get money from banks.
Here are five simple ways through which you can increase your chances of getting a loan from a bank, and grow your business.
·         Number one, you must understand why banks give out loans in the first place. Banks give out loans because they expect to be paid back. They will therefore only lend to a business purpose that they think is sound. A bank will not lend you money unless you can show that bank that you have a good business plan and that you will use the money that you are given as your business plan says.
·         The second thing is your reputation. Do you have a record of borrowing from banks and repaying what you borrowed? Or have you borrowed from other banks and not paid back? If you have a track record of not paying loans you have taken or issuing cheques which bounce, most banks will not be willing to lend you money.
·         Number three; do you have a good accounting system in place for your business? Many banks will only lend to businesses that have a good and accurate accounting system. The accounting system must show that the owner’s accounts and the accounts of the business are separate. The accounting documents which banks like to see before they lend you money for your business are the profit and loss account of the business, the balance sheet, the cash flow statement and etc.
·         Four, are you familiar with your industry? It is easier to convince a bank to lend to you if you are able to show that you understand the industry that you do business in and, that you understand the value that you bring to that industry. Do you know who your major competitions are? What do you offer that they do not or cannot? How do you intend to win a bigger market share over time? If you can show that you understand your competition and how to get ahead of them, banks may consider your business a good one to support.
·         Finally, be persistent. Many small business owners try just one of two banks and then give up on their goal of getting a loan because they have been rejected. It is important to know that banks have different business areas in which they focus. They also have different areas of knowledge. Some banks prefer to lend to really big companies while others prefer to lend to small or medium sized ones. If you really need a loan, don’t give up after trying just one or two banks.
If you have a good business plan, keep the right accounts and find the right bank, chances are that you will get the loan that you are looking for to grow your business.

Senate Presidency: Tinubu Withdraws Support for Akume, Lobbies for Ahmed Lawan

• North-central caucus kicks as APC moves to zone post to North-east
Chuks Okocha in Abuja

The battle for the principal offices of the National Assembly has taken another turn with the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Senator Bola Tinubu, withdrawing his support for the former Governor of Benue State, Senator George Akume, as his preferred candidate for the Senate presidency.

By jettisoning Akume, it is a clear indication that the North-central geopolitical zone may have lost out in its bid for the number one position in the National Assembly to the North-east zone.

Google Launches Project Fi Mobile Phone Network

Google Project Fi  will connect users to open wi-fi hotspots and Sprint and T-Mobile USA's 4G networks
Google has detailed its plan to run a mobile phone network in the US.
The firm will rent voice and data capacity from two existing operators - Sprint and T-Mobile - and use existing wi-fi hotspots, rather than build new infrastructure from scratch.
Initially, Project Fi will only be offered to Nexus 6 handset owners.
Google Fiber, the firm's "ultra-fast" broadband service, is already seen as a disruptive force in the US telecoms market.
It has been credited with encouraging Comcast and Time Warner Cable to offer their own customers speed boosts without higher prices.
However, Fiber's roll-out involved Google buying infrastructure built by companies that had collapsed as well as laying its own fibre optic cables - giving it full control of the service.
By contrast, one expert said running a mobile virtual network - which is dependent on rivals' equipment - might limit Project Fi's impact.
"The example of MVNOs in the US and elsewhere suggests that it's hard for their operators to dramatically change the industry because of their nature," said Ian Fogg from the IHS Technology consultancy.
"But the past isn't always a guide to the future.
"No-one would have thought that a handset manufacturer could transform the mobile industry by teaming up with one network - but that's what happened with Apple and AT&T when the iPhone launched.
"And Google itself has repeatedly shown that it is capable of changing the direction of an industry by entering it." Continue...

Ijaw group asks GEJ to grant presidential pardon to James Ibori before he leaves office

An Ijaw group called the Ijaw People’s Development Initiative, IPDI, in Delta State, over the weekend asked President Jonathan to grant presidential pardon to former governor of Delta state, James Ibori, before he leaves as president of Nigeria on May 29th.
"Ibori should be freed. Hundreds of persons, who looted heavily from government coffers are walking freely in the streets. The continuous incarceration of one corrupt man among a million other corrupt citizens cannot change the menace of high level corruption in the country. Ibori’s imprisonment could be seen as a witch-hunt and such is highly barbaric and provocative and the Nigerian government must quickly do something about his matter. Despite the ordeals Ibori is passing through, Deltans hold him in high esteem and his great achievements while in office cannot be discountenanced.
There should be no sacred cow among political office holders. Ibori’s case is not different, he is a victim of circumstances. Release him and let him breathe fresh air and let other corrupt public office holders be tried as well.” National President the group, Mr. Austin Ozobo, in interactive with newsmen, said (Vanguard)

NNPC Missing Money Traced To A Top Bank

$16million out the $20billion allegedly stolen from the coffers of the Nigeria National Petroleum, NNPC by the management of the corporation have reportedly been refunded by the management of one of the top banks in Nigeria due to fear of prosecution by the incoming government.

According to nairausd.blogspot.com, in the eye of the storm is the embattled Minister of Petroleum, Mrs. Deziani Allison-Madueke, has since commenced on a shuttle between Nigeria and abroad.

Until the conclusion of the presidential election, the minster  had allegedly embarked on shenanigans and illegal stunts in an alleged bid to stop the National Assembly from investigating her roles in the missing  funds.

According to a security source who pleaded anonymity, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Nigeria’s former head of state pleaded with General Buhari not to prosecute the petroleum minister, a situation which led to the refund of $16milion last week, which was allegedly traced to the bank.

Also, the appointment of the CBN governor may not be unconnected to the sordid transactions between the bank and the Jonathan led administration as the CBN governor was once a managing director in the bank.

Allison-Madueke had allegedly masterminded the CBN governor’s appointment and even handpicked him to occupy the post in a bid to cover up her shady deals.

She is now said to be on ‘medical tourism’ outside the country, a situation which sources revealed is a move to stall her arrest after the 29 May hand over.

The Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke, had sued some individuals and organizations to prevent them from reporting on the controversial missing $20billion oil money.

No Electoral Offender Will Go Unpunished- Buhari

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari has vowed not to allow electoral offenders go unpunished. He said he would encourage the setting up of a special court to first prosecute them.

Buhari made this known on Saturday, while speaking with journalists in Daura, Katsina State after he cast his ballot in the governorship and state House of Assembly elections in Kofar Baru 3 of Sarkin Yara Ward, Daura Local Government Area

He said that his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) was critically following developments in Edo, Rivers and Imo States in the gubernatorial and House of Assembly polls, gathering evidence to present to INEC and the courts.

“I will look for understanding and cooperation from the National Assembly where a change in the Constitution or the Electoral Act is necessary. So, for me, to make up my mind here and later try to lobby is out of it because some of them, if they are very hard, they will give me a tough time. I will say that I haven’t read the Uwais Report, but I have read a few of the extracts from the papers, I think it is a good thing and we will encourage it.

“But we need to get a comprehensive report from the field. The running battle from Rivers, the South-East and the rest of the South-South, especially by Governor Amaechi, Governor Rochas Okorocha and governor of Edo State with INEC officials and law enforcement agencies and the Army is remarkable.

“I think it has to be totally exposed so that Nigerians will know which of the law enforcement agencies and at what levels is undermining the Constitution of Nigeria because the Electoral Act is derived from the Constitution of the country, so that in future, those who are in position will know that they are not beyond the law. I think that is what will bring more stability into the system. In view of that, I will try and work with the National Assembly to make sure that we do something about it.

“I will like to work within the system because we believe in it. I have just told you about three governors and the battle they have with the law enforcement agents in their states.

“We discussed and advised them to try and document these things legally so that it can be taken before the court and we will make sure that we register the cooperation of the court so that people who work against the law are prosecuted, especially those who have lost their immunity and those who think they have immunity because this is the best way to stabilize the system.

“People must not benefit from being lawless. You can’t be in a position by virtue of the Constitution, subvert the Constitution and continue to enjoy the privileges offered by the Constitution. I don’t think that will be acceptable by the APC. So, whether you are in the opposition or the government, you have to behave yourself. I think that is the way we can make progress,” Buhari said.

Commenting on the conduct of yesterday’s elections, Buhari said disruptions were less than in the presidential and National Assembly elections held penultimate week. But stories in Lagos and other APC states were unfortunate.

“I think there are less disruptions today than we had during the presidential and National Assembly elections. I hope that it was as a result of the bandwagon effect because APC had the upper hand during the last elections. But what happened in the South-South and the South-East cannot be compared to what happened today.

“What I saw was that there was a few cases of ballot snatching in some local government areas in Bayelsa and a few disruptions in I think, Adamawa state. But that is nothing near to what happened two weeks ago. I don’t think it is up to 25 percent of what happened two weeks ago. I think that after the elections, both parties, APC and PDP will perhaps make their presentations to INEC or the courts and then more details will emerge.

“Definitely maybe because the turnout is much lower. Info9ja
