Charles Novia writes Chika Ike's Manager, Serah Donald a stronge worded letter

Charles Novia writes Chika Ike’s Manager, Serah Donald a strong

Just barely 2 weeks after actress Chika Ike’s manager, Serah Donald took controversial filmmaker and critic, Charles Novia to the cleaners, following an article he posted on his blog.

Novia has hit back at the former, calling her an ‘industry lap-dog.’ Charles published his grand, strong worded reply on his blog.

Read: –

A SALVO FOR SERAH

I have mulled a bit about how to put out a riposte to a character called Serah Donald who went on an uncouth rage against my person on social media recently.

My first reaction was to ignore her as I saw through the statement that she really had nothing to say but perhaps wanted to gain some little fame through an open insult directed at me. And so I did.

But in retrospect (and knowing that most things put out on social media are usually
twisted the other way to suit such whims, as it were) I decided not to really let it rest but to perhaps give a riposte on some of her rabid tirades.

I use the word ‘rabid’ because the impression I have of this Serah, which still persists, is that she is somewhat of an industry lap-dog and one whom I have met formally only twice in my life and fleetingly too because I did not want some of her fleas around me.

I was introduced to her in 2007 in Los Angeles while I was attending a film industry convention on Nollywood where I was one of the Speakers on the positive trajectory of an evolving Nollywood. I vaguely remember some less-than-Plain-Jane looking lady staring at me in a manner which unsettled me a bit. To her, it could her been a fawning look but to me, from my perspective, it looked like a deviant character from a horror movie giving me the looks! It was my good friend, Stephanie Okereke ( now Linus) who was graduating from the New York Film Academy that period, who formally introduced her to me before I understood why she was awestruck.

‘It is a great honour to meet you, Sir’, Serah said and went on to gush about how she was a big fan of my movies and actually reeled out some of my hit titles she had watched. I believe I was told then that was a student of the New York Film School at Stephanie’s flat in Los Angeles where this Serah was perhaps squatting or was somewhat of a personal maid or something I can’t be bothered to remember   .

I completely forgot about this young lady and never saw her again till sometime in 2013 in an event organised by the Tourism Ministry at the Civic Centre in Lagos. I pride myself in having a retentive memory for faces and when Serah and her Principal, Chika Ike, walked up to my table to greet me, I instantly remembered her face, though now overtly padded with some hideous make-up. We exchanged pleasantries and she took my number.

I took the pains to reconstruct how I know this young lady so as to put to rest any other misinterpretation by the usual busybodies. And also to dismiss her silly insinuation in her statement that I was the one who met her in California!   On reading her guttersnipe against my person, the first thought which crossed my mind was that perhaps her Principal, Chika Ike, might actually be in cahoots with her in putting out that statement because if, as Serah claims, she is Chika’s ‘Manager’, (who in this clime and industry are usually glorified messengers) it might be the case of the tail wagging the dog.

This Serah Donald crossed a line of decorum by calling me names.  That is not new within the circle of her ilk who are sometimes critiqued by me in professional articles but what is irksome is her blatant disregard for seniority within the industry.  Whilst her lack of manners is actually a vindication of one’s perception that she actually might be obtuse by inclination, it also is proof of lack of home training.  And such reduces the value of a Lady’s Bride Price in this part of the

Interview: Tope Folarin

Tope at Library of Congress March 2014

Before Tope Folarin won the 2013 Caine Prize for African Writing, it might not have been completely clear that he was an African writer. His parents are Nigerian, of course, but he was born in Utah, where he grew up; he went to school in Texas and Georgia; he was a Rhodes scholar at Oxford; and he now lives in Washington, DC. As he told me, in fact, it hadn't occurred to him that his short story, "Miracle," would be eligible for consideration for the Caine prize, until the Nigerian novelist Helon Habila urged him to have it submitted. He did, and it won, and now he can certainly be an "African writer" if he wants to be.

Maybe the most interesting thing about Tope Folarin's Caine Prize is that there wasn't much controversy about it. It raised a few eyebrows that the award had gone to a story about Nigerian Christianity set in Texas and written by someone who was born and raised in the United States. But mostly the fact that the most high-profile prize for African literature went to a solidly American writer passed without heated polemic, at least that I saw. If you expected Tope Folarin's authenticity to be called into question, you would have been (mostly) disappointed. A few days before Folarin won, in fact, Maaza Mengiste wrote a blistering op-ed, in which she denounced the question of who is a "real" African:

Ramsey Nouah Talks About His Wife, Politics and Celeb Marriage Crashes

Ramsey Nouah

In a recent interview with Nigeriafilms, award winning Nollywood actor, Ramsey Nouah talks about keeping his wife from the limelight, joining politics and celeb marriage crashes. Enjoy the excerpts below:

Your wife is hardly seen at events, why is that so?

It is part of the reason, that is how we actually balance the equation, we try not to be all up in everybody face, everybody now knows my family and they can say this about her and about me that’s the beautiful way to actually keep it. We are 14-years in marriage and we are still going and I love that

A lot of your colleagues have veered into politics what’s your take on that?

I think they are looking out for changes, movie as you can tell, talks about the ills in the society, talks about problems that we find down the street; matrimonial problems either health problems, cancer, abandoned children. All these things we find in our society that we talk about in our movies. And some of our artistes are beginning to see that they can actually be a servant of the people to help rectify those things because they know their pain, so they are thinking we can go there and help and try and make a change that’s why they are doing it.

Tell us about the movie, ’30 Days in Atlanta?

It is a romantic comedy, actually shot part in Nigeria and part in Atlanta United States of America. AY played Akpos and I played his cousin.

How was it like acting alongside AY, the comedian or are you gradually becoming a comic actor too?

Well, the movie is a romantic comedy, and not just that it was fun for everybody.

What is your take on marriages of celebs that crash?

There is nothing I can say to them, I am a celebrity myself. Whatever I say compromises my judgement. I can’t tell celebrity how to hold on to their marriage, nobody can actually tell you how to hold on to your marriage. It is between the lovers; the man and the woman. It is either they are compatible or not. Most times, I would say to about 60 to 70 percent of the time showbiz actually is one of the reason why marriages crumble. So, I can’t tell them what they already know. Some people put extra effort and it just doesn’t work. In other words you realize that you’ve not found a compatible partner that’s why it’s so.

You are lover boy in movies, are you romantic in life?

Well, that’s left for my wife to decide, I don’t know if she thinks I am romantic.

Minister give kudos to TETfund

The minister of Education, Malam Ibrahim Shekarau, has commended TETFund’s efforts towards the development of tertiary education in Nigeria.

He gave the commendation at the inauguration of TETFund sponsored, published, specialized higher education textbooks and TETFund guidelines on institution based research, in Abuja on Thursday.

Shekarau lauded the National Book Development Fund Intervention by TETFund to address dearth of quality books and reading materials in educational institutions.

He said this will encourage the production and consumption of locally produced books and journals.

“I want to thank the members of the Technical Advisory Group, who are in charge of facilitating the implementation of the book development fund.

“Their effort under the supervision and sponsorship of TETFund has made it possible for us to convert 20 manuscripts into specialised higher education textbooks.’’

Shekarau said that he was happy that TETFund had continued to provide sponsorship for Institution-based research (IBR) from 2009 to date.

He said that N5 billion has been allocated to public universities in the country to encourage institution based research.

According to him, 70 per cent of the allocated funds are still not accessed adding that the trend is not acceptable and does not show seriousness on the part of stakeholders.

“Research work remains the cardinal objective of any tertiary institution world over. Out of the allocation of N10 billion to universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for IBR, N7.8 billion is yet to be accessed.

“I want to urge the managers of our tertiary institutions to seize the opportunity presented by the launching of the TETFund guidelines to expedite efforts at accessing these funds.

Shekarau urged TETFund to ensure that the objectives of setting up the national research fund and the national book development were actualised.

Responding, the Executive Secretary of TETFund, Mr Sulieman Bogoro, said the fund was doing everything possible to ensure that tertiary institutions were well equipped and up to standard.

Bogoro said that the fund received fewer complaints from tertiary institutions in the past four years in the area of infrastructure.

“TETFund has been able to upgrade and build more structures in all tertiary institutions in the country.’’

He also urged lecturers to come up with good research materials, as funds were available for anyone with good research proposals.

He added that the fund will continue to intervene in all tertiary institutions and fund more researches in the future.

Chairman, Board of Trustees, Musa Babayo, said TETfund had done so much to restore, rehabilitate and consolidate the education sector through different intervention models.

Babayo said that models such as the provision of infrastructure, capacity building, funding of educational research and other areas of education had added value to knowledge.

He said that the board’s staff and management of TETfund would key into the developmental agenda of government in moving the education sector to higher grounds.

Russia 2018: FBI to probe FIFA officials

Few hours after FIFA, the world football governing body, gave itself a clean bill of health, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has said it is stepping up the pace of a corruption investigation into senior leaders of FIFA, U.S. law enforcement officials have said.

The FIFA ethics committee Thursday announced that it was closing its investigation into alleged corruption in the 2018 and 2022 bidding process that awarded the World Cup to Russia and Qater, respectively.

According to reports from CNN.com, FIFA said its investigation found no corruption and has no reason to reopen the bidding process, but the FBI, which is leading the U.S. probe, is not ready to do the same.

Investigators are moving ahead with their probe, which could result in charges against senior FIFA officials, the U.S. law enforcement officials said.

FBI agents based in New York are moving ahead with their 3-year-old investigation, which will likely benefit from the findings of a former U.S. prosecutor, Michael Garcia, who was hired by FIFA to do an internal probe.

The FBI plans to seek access to Garcia’s report, which FIFA has not yet released. So far, the FBI has declined to offer an official comment on the development.

Garcia on Thursday distanced himself from the FIFA ethics announcement, saying: “Today’s decision by the Chairman of the Adjudicatory Chamber contains numerous materially incomplete and erroneous representations of the facts and conclusions detailed in the Investigatory Chamber’s report. I intend to appeal this decision to the FIFA Appeal Committee.”

The FBI investigation includes the cooperation of a former top FIFA official who has provided documents and recordings of meetings with colleagues, law enforcement officials said.

The New York Daily news, which reported on the cooperation of former FIFA official Chuck Blazer, quoted Blazer as saying: “I just can’t talk about that.”

FIFA has long been dogged by allegations of corruption. In 2011, the FIFA banned for life Mohamed bin Hammam, a Qatari member of its top governing body, for ethics violations.

Consequenly, the organization says it is planning unspecific improvements in the way it conducts World Cup bids.

Why Does Facebook's Mark Zukerberg Wear the Same T-shirt Everyday

Why does Facebook owner, Mark Zuckerberg, who is one of the world’s richest men, wear the same gray-coloured style of t-shirt every single day?

The answer was revealed by Zuckerberg himself, during a recent Facebook Q & A session, The Telegraph reports.

He revealed that for him, wondering what to wear every morning or what to eat breakfast would be a waste of valuable time that he could be using to look after the world’s largest social network.

Revealing that he owns multiple versions of the same T-shirt, he said:

“I really want to clear my life so that I have to make as few decisions as possible about anything except how to best serve this community.

I’m in this really lucky position where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than 1bn people, and I feel like I’m not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life, so that way I can dedicate all of my energy towards just building the best products and services.”

Deep.

I want to be Africa's best player -Musa

Eagles winger, Ahmed Musa, has said he would be happy to win the Africa’s best player award.

The CSKA Moscow player was among the 25 players nominated for the Confederation of African Football African Player of the Year for 2014 on the back of his performances at the 2014 World Cup and with his Russian army club, africanFootball.com reports.

Last season, he won a second straight Russian championship with CSKA and has played a big role as the Moscow side aim to qualify for the knockout stage of the UEFA Champions League.

He also scored two goals against Argentina as Nigeria reached the knockout stage of the World Cup for the third time in the country’s history.

Last month, he fired another brace against Sudan in Abuja to revive Nigeria’s fading hopes of qualifying for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

“I feel very happy to be nominated for African Player of the Year award by CAF. It is a great feeling to be appreciated. I will be so glad if I win it and I hope to emerge as the winner,” Musa told AfricanFootball.com

The late Rasheed Yekini was the first Nigeria star to win the award in 1993 and Nwankwo Kanu was the last to win it in 1999.

Other Nigerian stars who have won this prestigious individual accolade are – Emmanuel Amuneke (1994), Kanu (1996) and Victor Ikpeba (1997).

The winners of this award will be decided by votes from the head coaches and technical directors of the national associations affiliated to CAF.

The GLO-CAF Awards Gala will take place on January 8, 2015 in Lagos.

...Huntersola! I am a husband and a boyfriend to every girl in the school. Meet S.U U.I President.

I am a husband and a boyfriend to every girl in the school. No one is closer to me that the other. But once you are pregnant, I don’t know what to do o.

- HUNTERSOLA

.

The SU President spoke to StrictlyUI's Onah Buike and Charles
Oyadoke about many issues in the school and went a bit personal too. Excerpts here.

CAN WE MEET YOU?

 My name is Oluwafemi
Victor. People call me Huntersola. I am a 400level student of Agricultural
Economics, Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. And I am a resident of the hall
of great men Kuti Hall and by His Grace, I am the Students’ Union President of the
University of Ibadan.

HOW HAS BEEN THE STUDENTS’ UNION PRESIDENCY BEEN? THE
CAMPAIGN AND EVERYTHING?

Glory be to God, it has been a wondrous task because this is
a platform that I have not operated in but so far so good, we are able to
balance a lot of things together. We have faced a lot of challnges, a lot of
difficulties but we are still progressing.

HOW DID YOU FEEL WHEN YOU WHERE HANDED OVER THE MANTLE OF
LEADERSHIP OF THE STUDENTS’ BODY?

I had mixed feelings. I felt happy because I got what I have
been craving for but also I am afraid of the task ahead of me. Not because I
cannot do it but because it is not easy to oversee the affairs of this union.
This union is made up of different intellectuals – those that are better than
I, those that I am on the same level with and those below me. Despite this
fact, I am still the number one student of this university and it is my duty to
direct the union. So far, it has been good.

WHAT ARE THE CHALLENGES AND THE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF YOUR
ADMINISTRATION?

Co-incidentally, this is our 3rd month in office.
We were sworn in on August 6 and in the three months of our administration; we
have been able to defend the yearning of Uities. We have been having issues of
electricity and water but we have been able to tackle it well.

Other important things have happened. Now, we are working on
giving Uites a best ever union week. The Union Week will be on November 23 –
29. We are putting everything together to give them the best. The Vice
President is working on that.

Despite the fact that we are working against time having
been sworn in late last semester during exam. We are having issues but we are
trying to do our best so that they can feel us and we are still progressing. We
have been on the neck of the management to ensure that the welfare of the
students is taken care of.

WHAT DIFFERENCE WILL THE STUDENTS BE EXPECTING FROM YOUR
ADMINISTRATION AS THIS IS YOUR THIRD MONTH IN OFFICE?

We still have 6 – 7 months so we are working on something
new that would Wow UI. When we were coming in, we promised the students a
better representation and I think we are doing that very well. When we were
coming, we advocated for the inter-hall that has just ended. This was to
promote the spirit of sportsmanship and friendship among the students and I
think we achieved that. There are other things that are coming on board.

HOW HAS THE SCHOOL MANAGEMENT BEEN RESPONDING TO YOUR
ADMINISTRATION?

We are still at the threshold of our best. The management
are trying their best and they are being responsive but we are not yet there.
We go to them to work things out and so far, they have given us a listening
ear. But once they don’t do what we want, we know what we can resort to. We are
ready to do all sort of negotiations in order to improve our welfare and get to
the threshold of our best.

WHAT ARE YOUR HOBBIES?

I like administrative work. I love travelling a lot.

WHAT IS YOUR BEST FOOD?

It is quite funny, I love a local food. I love Amala and
Ewedu.

ARE YOU IN A RELATIONSHIP?

It is quite complicated just like you put on Facebook.

HOW DO YOU HANDLE ADVANCES FROM FEMALE FOLKS?

I am a husband.

How The Social Media Is Eating Into Your Brain

I
joined Facebook few years after I got admission into this prestigious
University of Ibadan; it was unlike several of my colleagues who were already
recording close to a thousand friends at the same time. It was partly due to my
inability to get a multimedia enabled phone prior at that time and my sustained
focus at passing my GCE Certificate Exams.

I
am an introvert; one who totally loves his privacy. So when I found a tool that
could make me stay indoors and interact with the world at the same rate
extroverts do in real life, I fell in love with it. I could meet people without
seeing them eye to eye, I could read across platforms, I could be accepted
without my flaws, interact with less transfer of vices; like I
could be speaking with someone without being in his or her company. Life was
perfect for my introverted self.

But
it took me long before I came to reality with the seemingly perfect lives of
the people on the social media. It began to seem to me like a charade, a façade
at its best; the edited pictures, the endless adventures to city malls and city
shindigs, the faultless lives, and the fact that almost every person is always
at the heat of the moment, enjoying life at its peak.

That
was however not the problem. I had begun to realize how exhilarated I was when
accepting some people as friends, compared to others due to their profiles. It
was an honour to have someone with thousands of friends send you a friend
request compared to the indifference when someone with less than hundred
friends appeared on your Facebook requests list. I had also seen friends
jumping on their parents or uncles’ cars to take pictures meant for nothing but
social media.

Facebook
is unreal until you meet twitter. The twitter world is make-believe. A poverty
stricken lady could be waking up in a Jacuzzi and be deciding whether to have a
toast or eat out at a nearby restaurant that irritates her because their pizza
list has no pepperoni. The updates are endless, so much you wonder if the
country was now full of happy people, perfect people.

And
with Instagram, life could not be less unreal. A life in captioned pictures
tells all the story, so the energy people put into appearing to have the
greatest lives possible cannot be undervalued. And thus, different pressures
are set.

Tambuwal: APC, PDP caucuses hold different meetings today

The struggle for control of the leadership of House of Representatives between the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) continues, as both caucuses in the lower parliament hold strategic meetings today (Monday)

The PDP caucus meeting is expected to hold in Abuja while Speaker, Aminu Tambuwal, who is presently holidaying in Lagos, is expected to preside over the APC caucus meeting in Lagos.

A dependable source in the parliament told Daily Independent in confidence on Sunday that the PDP meeting was called to discuss the workability of the mandate given to the caucus by the PDP leadership after a meeting held on Friday night.

The PDP leaders reportedly instructed the party’s caucus in the parliament to write and seek the reconvening of the parliament’s plenary for tomorrow (Tuesday).

The emergency session, it was gathered, was to have an agenda of a demand for leadership change following the defection of the Speaker to the APC from the PDP.

However, the law stipulates that an elected Speaker can only be impeached by two-third majority of the entire members of the parliament, which in this case amounts to 240 members.

But the PDP, though, in the majority, has just 195 members, with APC having 159, APGA two, Accord Party two and Labour Party one.

In this regard, the PDP needs 45 other members to join its ranks to be able to meet the constitutionally required 240 majority to effect the change of leadership, which can only be achieved through impeachment only if the Speaker refuses to resign.

Kwara 2015: Saraki's daughter, Lawal's son battle for PDP gov ticket

About 14 aspirants are set to vie for the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to contest in the 2015 governorship election in Kwara State.

The aspirants, most of who are said to have collected the party’s expression of interest form, include six from Kwara Central Senatorial District, seven from the South district and one from the North.

The aspirants from the Central District include the 2011 governorship candidate of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Dele Belgore; Shuaib Oba Abdulraheem, who has just resigned as the chairman of the Federal Character Commission; Kale Belgore; Abdulrhaman Abdulrasaq; Akeem Lawal, son of the late former governor Muhammed Lawal; and  Gbemi Saraki, daughter of the late political icon of the state, Olusola Saraki, the only female aspirant.

Those from Kwara South include Simon Ajibola, a serving senator; Suleiman Ajadi, who has just resigned as the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters; Jani Ibrahim, an industrialist; John Dara, a former aspirant in 2003; Sunday Babalola, who first showed interest in the office in 2011; and Ben Duntoye, a former commissioner in the state.

Former Speaker of the state House of Assembly, who also served as minister of transport and sports,  Ibrahim Isa Bio, is the only aspirant from the North District, which produced the governor in 1992.

Some of the aspirants who  have publicly declared their ambition to contest the governorship race condemned the way the state is being governed at present under the control of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and promised that, if elected governor, they would  effect change in the state.

Lawal promised to promote good governance, economic prosperity and industrialization, saying that agriculture and the human capital resources of the state would be promoted to achieve economic prosperity for the people.

Bio assured that he would focus on education, agriculture, infrastructure, and sports development and run a transparent government.

He said he would provide good health care and put an end to the situation where people of the state in his Baruteen Local Government Area go to the Republic of Benin for health care because there were no health facilities to cater them in the area.

Ibrahim said he had a four-pronged agenda of job creation for the youth, agricultural revolution that would make agriculture rewarding to all, natural resource development that would ensure the potentialities of the state are exploited for the benefit of all, and infrastructural development that would cut across the state.

Chinedu Ubachukwu Wins Gulder Ultimate Search 11

Twenty four year old Chinedu Ubachukwu has emerged the winner of this year’s edition of Gulder Ultimate Search. The Anambra state indigene thus became the 11th winner of Africa’s first and longest running reality TV show.

Chinedu Ubachukwu

To attain the feat, he edged out 28-year old Emmanuel Afolabi and 29 year-old Nne Cosy Joe. After more than three weeks in the jungle, only the three contestants survived the harsh weather conditions and the arduous tasks they were subjected to.

Incidentally, on the morning of the final search, both Emmanuel and Cosy Joe gave Chinedu their lanterns. They told him “this will light your path”, oblivious of the fact that that his light would shine the brightest at the end of the day. Both Emmanuel and Cosy talked about reducing their load.

Their final task was to retrieve the great General’s War helmet which according to folklore, had been hidden in the belly of the Aguleri Forest of Anambra State.

Ironically, when the contestants commenced their journey from Boat Landing, where they camped the previous night, Chinedu appeared the weakest of them. He even stated that he was not 100 per cent fit; adding that if the final search for the helmet became a purely physical task, it may be to his disadvantage.

Chinedu was the last to climb over a very high wall and the remaining contestants insisted that he should be the first to cross another rope ladder which was suspended between two trees because he appeared weak.

As the search neared its end, Chinedu appeared to regain his strength and the trio raced across a river which was at their waist-level, towards their work stations situated at the belly of the Aguleri forest. There they met an emissary of the Council of Elders who adorned a red cloak. His duty was to grant them right of passage only after correctly pieced together the tiles which they found during their very long trek.

Cosy was the first to solve the riddle, followed by Chinedu and then Emmanuel. They raced towards three canoes and paddled away in different directions. Both Emmanuel and Cosy Joe appeared to paddle their canoes aimlessly while Chinedu paddled towards a particular direction. It turned out Chinedu rowed his canoe towards a clay pot which was emitting fire.

At this point, Cosy Joe appeared frustrated and angrily hit the water with his bare hands. He had no paddle. As Cosy paddled his boat to shore and alighted on land, Emmanuel attempted to row his canoe in Chinedu’s direction.

Chinedu raced on land and retrieved the great General’s Helmet surrounded by three fire pots. Hence, he joins the Order of Heroes as the 11th winner of Gulder Ultimate Search.

Chidi Mokeme, the Anchor man, soon arrived on canoe and congratulated Chinedu on his great feat. He said: “After 26 murderous days in the Aguleri jungle, after days and nights of pain and sorrow; thinking about the unknown, nursing your wounds with sweat, with blood, it is you Chinedu who made it here. It is you who has carved your name in history. It is you who has earned the bragging rights. It is you who has made it into the elite league of extra ordinary warriors. By the powers conferred on me by the Council of Elders, I now pronounce you Last Man Standing!”

Incidentally, when the relatives of the final four contestants paid them a visit in the jungle two days earlier, it was only Chinedu’s mother that urged him to return home as champion. Amidst tears, Mrs. Ubachukwu told her son “I know you will make me proud. Come home with the crown.”

For his feat, Chinedu will be rewarded with N10 million and a brand new SUV at a party fit only for royalty. Two other contestants will also receive brand new vehicles. They are Samantha Appi, who will drive home a brand new Ford Eco sport for emerging as the Last Woman Standing and the winner of the Viewers’ Choice, who will go home with a Ford Focus.

Fall In Oil Price Will Make Nigeria's Economy Better

As global oil price continue to fall, Minister of National Planning, Dr. Abubakar Sulaiman, has described the development as a blessing in disguise for Nigeria.

Sulaiman, who is also Deputy Chairman, National Planning Commission, said that the development would have a positive impact on Nigeria’s economy.

He gave the assurance, while speaking at an institutional lecture for Block 3 participants of the National Defence College (NDC) in Abuja in a paper, entitled National Planning and Vision 20:2020: An Assessment.

Explaining why he believed the oil price fall will have a positive impact on the economy, Sulaiman said since about 80 percent of the country’s revenue come from oil, the government will be challenged to break even.

“All we need do is explore other areas. The Customs has surpassed its target, same with FIRS. We need to block all loopholes which are what we are doing as a government.

“We can do without oil to survive, because there are nations who do not have oil and are pretty surviving. So, what are we talking about?

“The present administration is one that has foresight and had long prepared for this through its policies and programmes in various sectors, agriculture inclusive.

“Government is diversifying. It will affect us, but not to the extent people think. There are areas the country can still explore.

“It is a challenge. We should not be lazy; we should prepare for the future. Oil will not be there eternally,” he said.

5 reasons why celebrity marriages fail - Fowowe

The massive celebrity divorce cases in recent times have raised questions in different groups. Everyone seems to be asking. Why do celebrity marriages fail? In an exclusive chat with Adetorera Idowu, sex and relationship expert, Praise Fowowe, highlights 5 reasons why celebrity marriages fail.                                           Upbringing                                             I always tell people that there is nothing called a bad marriage; you can only have two bad people or one bad person upsetting the system. People attribute marital breakups to several reasons but the part no one talks about is the upbringing of the people involved. If you have not been brought up as a whole person from childhood, by the time you get married you are already destroyed and naturally you won’t be able to run a marriage.                    Unhappiness                                      We often assume that because a person can speak English or act or sing, we assume the person is sane but most of the time I realise this is not true. When I counsel people and they tell me they are not happy in their marriages, the first question I ask is, “Have you ever been happy in your life?” And they realise they’ve never really been happy.                                            Wrong intention                          People get married for the wrong reasons. Some because they feel it’s the next thing to do. Some feel because they have money, while some others do it because all their friends are married. These reasons signal that your reason for getting married is wrong. Only dead people can marry successfully. You have to be dead to yourself, dead to your ego; dead to what you think is right, dead to culture, dead to religion, dead to a whole lot of things. I’ve been married for over 8 years so I know what I’m talking about.        Pride                                                        If I didn’t know many of these celebrities 10 years ago, I would have thought they were not born in Nigeria, because of the quality of lives they are living. Some of them wore patched up school uniforms while some were from extreme poverty. Suddenly, they start making money and they become totally different people. It’s shocking that we are in such a hurry to catch up with Hollywood. We are not just producing like them; we are beginning to act like them. For those who find themselves on the red carpet consistently, when they get married, they don’t know how to switch from red carpet to domestic mode so they still carry the red carpet mentality into their homes. At home, I’m a husband to my wife, a father to my children. I’ll be stupid to expect my wife to accord me the respect my fans accord me. She did not marry a celeb, she married a Praise Fowowe. That’s why I don’t know the difference between red or green or blue carpet. When people live their lives thinking that endorsement deals are a big deal then there is no way their marriages wont crash.                   Low self esteem We have people who think that being on the red carpet is a big issue. If you find yourself on the red carpet and think you’re bigger than the whole world, you have a self esteem problem and self esteem has nothing to do with whether you’re a celebrity or not. I realise that people who behave like that are people who are very poor. Poverty has nothing to do with money; poverty is a thing of the mind. When you’re mentally poor and you have something that looks like money, you’ll be rude to people. I’m free enough to eat roasted corn on the road. Because you’re a celeb, when your car breaks down you feel pressured, meanwhile it’s a normal thing. If I have to go from my office to Opebi and there is traffic and I have an appointment to catch, I will pick a NAPEP and go where I want to go. It doesn’t change me. When people have low self esteem, it manifests in so many ways so we call it irreconcilable differences. Irreconcilable difference is another word for immaturity. Mature people can reconcile every now and then.

That was how AIG Joseph Mbu made a fool of himself the other day…

Assistant Inspector General of Police, Joseph Mbu is often in the news for one reason or the other, this time around, the self proclaimed ‘Lion of the Police force’ got annoyed that Amaechi Anakwue, a Senior correspondent at AIT, called him ‘controversial’ on television.

Apparently, the meaning of controversial was lost on Mbu, who deemed it as a law broken, and promptly had Anakwe arrested by his band of men in black. After being made to sweat for some time, the reporter was released on bail.

The management of African Independent Television, AIT, immediately released a statement to disemminate the details of the incident. It said, “Detained AIT senior correspondent Amaechi Anakwue has been released on bail by AIG Zone 7, Joseph Mbu.

He was however asked to return to the station on Friday. It would be recalled that the reporter was arrested by Joseph Mbu yesterday for describing him as ‘controversial’ on a television programme. In a swift reaction to his arrest, the management of Daar communication Plc, owners of AIT, had yesterday unequivocally demanded the unconditional and immediate release of its reporter from police custody.”

Mbu, still not satisfied, seemingly believed that the gravity of Anakwe’s crime was too high to let slide, took it a notch higher, by subsequently charging him to an Abuja Magistrate court on the grounds of ‘defamation of character’. Mbu got criticised from several quarters, but most of all from Former Minister of Education, Obiageli Ezekwesili, who gave him a thorough dressing down on micro-blogging platform, Twitter.

She called him the word ‘controversial’ more than twice, and Mbu, having probably found a dictionary to check for the meaning of ‘controversial’, remained mute, and eventually did the needful.

Later in the day, after having felt the heat, Mbu’s people withdrew the charge of ‘defamation of character’ filed against Anakwue. The charge was withdrawn by the police and the Magistrate Court struck out the case.

Hong Kong protests: CY Leung refuses to quit as leader

Protesters have been on the streets in large numbers

Hong Kong's Chief Executive CY Leung says he will not resign, amid calls from pro-democracy protesters for him to step down. But he said his government was willing to hold talks with the protesters.

The protesters are angry at China's plan to vet candidates for elections in 2017, and say they want full democracy.

They have surrounded two key government buildings in the territory, but Mr Leung warned them that they were breaking the law. At a news conference shortly before the protesters' midnight deadline for his resignation,

Mr Leung warned that attempts to move on or occupy government buildings would have "very serious consequences". He said the territory's top civil servant, Chief Secretary Carrie Lam, would open a dialogue with student leaders as soon as possible.

Okada riders are making a gradual return to the roads of Lagos

The ban on the movement of commercial motorcycles, popularly known as Okada, seems to have been relaxed by the Lagos State Government, going by the sheer number of motorcyclists on major highways.

In areas like Ikeja, Surulere, Ketu, and some parts of Lagos Island, commercial motorcycles can be often seen plying their trade with little or no restrictions, as opposed to what was obtainable, when they were practically run off the roads.

Observers have accused the Governor Babatunde Fashola administration of relaxing the law based on 2015 political considerations. Many commercial motorcyclists, who represent a large voting block, have threatened to withdraw their support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) party if the law is not repealed or at-least relaxed.

For the records: Full text of Pres. Goodluck Jonathan’s 2014 Independence Day broadcast

- Below is the full text of President Goodluck Jonathan’s 2014 Independence Day broadcast to Nigerians. Fellow Nigerians:

 1. Today marks the 54th anniversary of our country’s independence as a sovereign nation. This is also the tenth month of our journey into a new century, having marked the centenary of our nation in January this year.

2. The first one hundred years were marked by triumphs and tribulations, benefits and burdens, opportunities and challenges. We made some far reaching advances in building a strong, united and prosperous nation. We also overcame the forces of disunity that culminated in a debilitating civil war. We have also renewed our faith in one another, and in our country. We have proven that we are truly a resilient nation.

3. In my address to the nation last year, I did emphasize that we were in a sober moment in our country. We are still in that mood in spite of the many accomplishments of our administration. Our sombreness has to do with the crises of nationhood occasioned by the activities of terrorist elements who have done the unimaginable to challenge our unity as a people.

Google celebrated Nigeria’s 54th Independence Day Anniversary

           google doddle
How sweet of them.

Google is celebrating with Nigeria today by changing its logo on Google.com.ng to a doodle which shows characters from some of the Nigerian tribes.

Also, some of the widely used modes of public transportation available in the country – keke Napep (tricycle), a danfo bus & an okada (motorcycle) – were depicted in the animation.

And then, the Nigerian president is depicted by the character carrying the Nigerian flag with black hat, clad in traditional Bayelsa clothing.

Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!

Happy 54th Independence Anniversary to Nigeria and Nigerians... And happy new month to all SLB readers. Wishing you and yours the very best this month & always!
